Panel and settings icons misconfigured

Bug Description

The notifications icon in the top panel shows a questions mark, independently of the chosen icon theme or desktop theme. Same happens in the notifications area and in the Top Panel tab in the budgie settings application.

System wide the icons change correspondingly when choosing a new theme, but the notification icon, the notification icon in the side panel and some icons in the Budgie settings app do not change anymore.

Problem started a couple of days ago, when I was trying out new themes. I run system updates once in a week, or more often.

I am using Ubuntu 17.10 with Budgie installed separately on top of it.

Have you installed a local icon theme pack e.g. in .icons or .local/share/icons ?

I had an icon pack in this folder, but moving it away didn't have any perceptible impact on the wrong display of the icons.

Further using budgie, I noticed that many other icon theme also stopped displaying the correct icon for many applications. Many icons are just identical.

Does resetting the panel work?

nohup budgie-panel --reset --replace &

Did not resolve, unfortunately ...

Delving further into the issue, I found out that I might have deleted a necessary icon theme from usr/share/icons. I recovered some and reinstalled Budgie Desktop and the issue is a least partially solved. With Moka, Pocillo and Numix icon themes the desktop looks fine. Using Faba, Uniform or Gnome icon themes, the desktop becomes distorted in way as to show icons that don't match with the application or a lot of identical icons for different applications.

Still checking ...

I am getting an error message in the terminal :

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of ubuntu-budgie-desktop:
 ubuntu-budgie-desktop depends on folder-color; however:
Package folder-color is not configured yet.

dpkg: error processing package ubuntu-budgie-desktop (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
No apport report written because the error message indicates its a followup error from a previous failure.
                             Errors were encountered while processing:
 folder-color-common
 folder-color
 ubuntu-budgie-desktop
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I supposed this is related to the issue.

Any hint of hoe to solve this?

Try running

    sudo apt -f install

That should either remove folder-color or install it ... or at least
give you an indication as to what the package management issue you
have.

I see this bug is an old Ubuntu bug. Do you know if it affects system performance? Should I take any action? I tried deleting it, but this would also imply in deleting the package Ubuntu Budgie ,,,,

It will have no effect in terms of system performance.

I suspect you can purge (sudo apt purge folder-color
folder-color-common) those two packages - this will also delete
ubuntu-budgie-desktop.

Then you can make sure you are fully up-to-date

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

Clean your packagement system

sudo apt clean
sudo apt update

And then reinstall ubuntu-budgie-desktop

If the problem still occurs - just repeat the above but dont install
ubuntu-budgie-desktop.

You can safely upgrade to 18.04 - and afterwards check that
ubuntu-budgie-desktop has been reinstalled - if it hasn't you can
install it again.
