Bug Description

This is a request to SRU the latest microrelease of the 0.8 LTS series of flatpak into artful.

[Impact]

New upstream micro release of flatpak, which backports important bug fixes and security improvements into the 0.8 LTS series.

Artful is currently at 0.8.7, whereas 0.8.9 is available upstream.

The main improvements from 0.8.7 are:

  * Security fixes for the dbus sandbox, debian bugs that were filed https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=888842 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=880451
  * Allows the hosts icons to be available in sandboxed apps, so they can use the hosts theme.
  * Give each app a persistent cache directory for fontconfig.
  * Improvements to environments variables exposed to sandboxed apps.
  * Results in reducing the number of patches being carried.

[Test Case]

The bugs being resolved are not simple to reproduce, see the test plan below for testing flatpak itself.

[Regression Potential]

Flatpak has a test suite, which is run on build across all architectures and passes.

I have written a manual test plan https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlan/flatpak which can be used to confirm the functionality. I have checked this test plan on an artful machine.

Regression potential is low, and upstream is responsive to any issues raised.

The attachment "Flatpak artful 0.8.7-5 to 0.8.9 debdiff" seems to be a debdiff. The ubuntu-sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they can review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. If the attachment isn't a patch, please remove the "patch" flag from the attachment, remove the "patch" tag, and if you are member of the ~ubuntu-sponsors, unsubscribe the team.

Hello Andrew, or anyone else affected,

Accepted flatpak into artful-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flatpak/0.8.9-0ubuntu0.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from verification-needed-artful to verification-done-artful. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-artful. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

I have run the test plan on an Artful VM, which passed all relevant tests successfully - I have noted the version of flatpak used below. Therefore I am making this as verification-done-artful.

$ apt-cache policy flatpak
flatpak:
  Installed: 0.8.9-0ubuntu0.1
  Candidate: 0.8.9-0ubuntu0.1
  Version table:
 *** 0.8.9-0ubuntu0.1 500
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful-proposed/universe amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     0.8.7-5 500
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/universe amd64 Packages

I have noticed that in https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/pending-sru.html for flatpak it states "Regression in autopkgtest for flatpak (ppc64el)". Looking at the test log I see "Server returned status 503: Service Unavailable", are we able to re-run autopkgtest to see if it was an infrastructure issue ?

Actually looking further down the list (http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/f/flatpak/artful/ppc64el), the previous versions of flatpak failed in the same way (eg at 2017-09-19 16:49:28 UTC). So this doesn't appear to be a regression.

This bug was fixed in the package flatpak - 0.8.9-0ubuntu0.1

---------------
flatpak (0.8.9-0ubuntu0.1) artful-proposed; urgency=medium

  * Update to flatpak 0.8.9 (LP: #1752381)
  * New upstream release backporting the following fixes from 0.10.x:
    - common/flatpak-run.c: Ignore unrecognised permission strings
instead of failing, for forwards compatibility
    - dbus-proxy/flatpak-proxy.c: Fix a D-Bus filtering bypass in
      flatpak-dbus-proxy (Closes: #888842)
    - profile/flatpak.sh.in: Simplify and improve profile.d snippet
(already done in Debian since 0.8.4-1, no practical effect)
    - Add compatibility with ostree ≥ 2017.7 (in Debian, the same
      changes were already in 0.8.7-2)
    - Security: Do not allow legacy eavesdropping on the D-Bus
      session bus (Closes: #880451)
    - Ensure that LD_LIBRARY_PATH is in the correct order, respecting
      extensions' priorities
    - Ensure that extensions are mounted in the correct order even if
they have differing priorities, fixing Steam
    - Remove PYTHONPATH, PERLLIB, PERL5LIB, XCURSOR_PATH from the
      environment given to sandboxed apps
    - Give each app a persistent cache directory for fontconfig
    - Make /usr/share/icons available in the sandbox so that sandboxed
apps can use the host's icon theme
    - Disable debug-level FUSE logging for the document portal
    - Make the * wildcard at the end of a D-Bus filtering rule match
zero or more components, so --talk="com.example.Foo.*" behaves
the same as D-Bus' arg0namespace="com.example.Foo". Previously,
it would only match exactly one component. This matches a proposed
design for integrating equivalent filtering into future dbus
      versions.
  * Drop our patch to profile/flatpak.sh.in, no longer necessary
  * debian/control: Update Vcs-* metadata for salsa.d.o migration
  * d/watch: Watch for new 0.8.x versions
  * d/p/0.8.8/: Drop patches that added compatibility with
ostree ≥ 2017.7, no longer necessary
