Bug Description

https://git.gnome.org/browse/cantarell-fonts/tree/NEWS

There is a new version of Cantarell. The new version is a complete redesign.

0.0.25 offers
Cantarell-BoldOblique.otf Cantarell-Bold.otf Cantarell-Oblique.otf Cantarell-Regular.otf

0.100 offers
Cantarell-Bold.otf Cantarell-ExtraBold.otf Cantarell-Light.otf Cantarell-Regular.otf Cantarell-Thin.otf

0.100 has no Cyrillic coverage but 0.0.25 does.

Adam Borowski has a script at http://ix.io/M14 (it has a dependency on libfont-freetype-perl) that you can run to get a list of the unicode characters covered. You can diff the two lists and then look up the glyphs in gucharmap or something.

I think the ugliest problem with missing glyphs is when a word will have to fallback to a different font for a single missing character.

Ubuntu doesn't use Cantarell by default, but the "vanilla" GNOME session does. There is a proposal to use Cantarell Light for some elements of GNOME Shell 3.28, but it should fall back to regular Cantarell if that's not available. (Cantarell Light is new in 0.100)

I believe we don't want this in bionic because of the regressions (particularly in Cyrillic).

Also, there was a Fedora complaint about spacing. I think Fedora 28 (May 2018) will even include the old Cantarell with plans to use the new one for Fedora 29, unless Cantarell receives an improved version soon.

I'm reopening the bug because we are still interested in tracking this update even if it won't make it into 18.04 LTS.

For instance, it will show at

Today's Cantarell release includes a "draft" of Cyrillic support. I figure it's close enough now we might as well get the new version.

For remaining missing glyphs, see
