Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Client Configuration:
Sending Mail Tab
Server: SMTP
TLS encryption
Authentication Type NTLM/SPA

OS Ubuntu 7.10
Evolution 2.12.1

When I attempted to send mail from Evolution via an Exchange 2007 sever with the above configuration I get the following error:
MAIL FROM command failed: Client does not have permissions to send as this sender

I have talked wilt the exchange administrator who assures me my account has all the necessary permissions. I installed Thunderbird with the exact same settings, (it pulled the configuration from Evolution) and was able to send mail just fine.

I used wireshark to dump the network conversation between evolution and exchange, as the transmissions were encrypted, I was not able to discern anything.

Do you receive mail? If not, then see bug Bug #25106 and references to other bugs.
Just tried to set-up an Exchange 2007 account in Evolution 2.21.90
in Hardy Alpha 4 without success. This is a confirmed bug, but upstream.

I see you are using an SMTP server so I should assume that the account
is set-up with IMAP for receiving and SMTP for sending. In Feisty I can
send and receive to an Exchange 2007 account using IMAP and SMTP.

Question: While incoming mail uses encryption and password authentication, the
outgoing server does not require encryption and authentication and would not work
if so configured. Try changing that.

Regarding my question: I am referring to how I have it set-up. I
see that you require authentication and encryption for sending
and I am wondering if that is the problem.

Sorry, one more thing -- I wish I could edit my comments.
To send mail I must have a VPN connection
to my server. WIthout it I can receive, but not send. Perhaps
that applies to your case.

 SMTP encryption is TLS
Authentication type is NTLM/SPA

Yes I recieve mail over SSL encrypted IMAP connection

Nope we're using encrypted transport for smtp. I tried about every combo I
could think of.

We don't use a VPN internally, so I doubt that vpn is the issue.

It is my understanding that you have to use VPN to access Exchange
2007 externally. You wouldn't need it internally because you are
part of the network when you log on into your system. From home
you need to become part of that network virtually.

right.. and the problem exists trying to access it internally.

I thought I could duplicate this today because I had a call from
someone who also could not send while using Evolution in
the office. To make a long story short, I deleted the account
in Edit -> Preferences and then added the account again
and it worked ... fortunately for him but unfortunately for
this bug. It's worth a try.

I tried that too, to no avail. I just double check what I did. Tried some
different possiblities like
ad\username which does not work at all ( prompts for password three times
and fails)
or ad/username also does not work at all (same as above)

logon and NTLM/SPA both receive the same error message
"client does not have permissions to send mail" which tells me it is
connecting and it is communicating enough to parse an error message from the
server. But its not sending the "right" information to the exchange server.
I feel I should be entering ad\<username> but that doesn't seem to make it
to the point that its authenticating.

Hope this helps you help me!
Thanks for your time!

Keep in mind error is MAIL FROM command failed: client does not have
permissions to send as this sender. Which says to me that the "from"
information is erroneous... somehow...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
