Hello
Please provide more information:
- Version of Ubuntu MATE you're using
- Is it in the live session or an installed system?
- If in an installed system, is it up to date?

This issue has occurred before and should have been fixed upstream, see:
https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/17-04-nm-applet-works-fine-but-shows-2-icons-in-the-system-tray/12020/35

Please provide output of command: apt-cache policy mate-panel

Changed in ubuntu-mate:
status: New → Incomplete

Hello,

Just made a fresh Ubuntu Mate 18.04 beta 2 install. Everything up to date. i'm having 2 wifi indicators in the applet. At first i could simply reboot to get rid of it, now its fixed. rebooted several times and i can't seem to removed one of them. changing between panel layouts doesnt help, nor resetting the panel.

apt-cache policy mate-panel:

Turns out, after some thinkering....PIA VPN client was to blame.
After removing it completely, reboot and the applet behaves correctly.
thanks

I'll add my comment here as well since the duplicate bug is expired:

I installed a few days ago. The two network icons appeared after the update for update-notifier-common:amd64 (3.192, 3.192.1) for me. At least it was recognized after the reboot. Thankfully at the same time my battery indicator came back because that randomly disappeared in an earlier update.
