Bug Description

After kernel upgrade from 4.10.0-35 to 4.10.0-37 Ubuntu 17.04 works extremely slow.
The reason is that i915 driver is UNCLAIMED now.

Error from Xorg logs is:
[ 56749.198] (EE) /dev/dri/card0: failed to set DRM interface version 1.4: Permission denied

Environment:
Ubuntu 17.04
Kernel 4.10.0-37
Intel HD Graphics 520

I started a kernel bisect between v4.10.0-35 and v4.10.0-37 The kernel bisect will require testing of about 7-10 test kernels.

I built the first test kernel, up to the following commit:
9b9d09867614a83355b82ffd123d29db5b860eaf

The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1723174

Can you test that kernel and report back if it has the bug or not? I will build the next test kernel based on your test results.

Thanks in advance

It looks like the bisect failed. All of the kernels I posted were reported as good and resolved the bug. One or more of them should have been bad and exhibited the bug.

I copied all of the test kernels back to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1723174. The test kernels for a specific SHA1 are in a sub directory with that SHA1 as the directory name.

Would it be possible for folks affected by this bug to test some of these kernels and see which one first exhibits the bug? Based on that, I can restart the bisect.

Now I cannot do it.
I will do it tomorrow around this time, having access to the hardware
involved.
Thanks

I tried all 5 kernels from here http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1723174 and all 5 contain reported issue. I installed them this way using provided 5 folders:

    sudo dpkg -i *.deb 2>&1 | grep -i error

These packages with -tools- were not installed due to unmet dependencies. Anyway I think they are not important. However booting to 4.10.0-35 fixes the problem.

Thanks for testing, Igor. I'll restart the bisect and say that commit 9b9d0986761 was bad this time and not good. That will give us an alternative SHA1 to test. I'll build the next kernel and post it shortly.

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote :

Since I'm restarting the bisect, it might be good to test the latest mainline kernel. That will tell us if this bug is already fixed upstream. The latest mainline kernel is available from:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.14-rc5/

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote :

After confirming the mainline kernel still exhibits the bug, I have the next test kernel ready.

The test kernel is built up to commit:
582945ec835e4fafbf57c87750c2e28f9c954714

The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1723174

Once mainline testing is complete, can you test that kernel and report back if it has the bug or not? I will build the next test kernel based on your test results.

Installed linux-headers...all, linux-headers...generic amd64, image amd64 and image-extra using dpgk -i *.deb this time instead of using the software centre I used to install the previous images. Started Ubuntu with 4.10.0-36-generic. This slow video problem is now present. But wifi now works.

If it's any use, I booted with the 4.10.0-37 kernel again and run the intel Graphics Update
Tool which reported this:
Checking if Intel graphics card available...
  • checking for i915 module in /sys/module
  • module NOT found, checking for upgraded variant(s)
  • no active i915 card detected, skipping driver update
Checking if Intel graphics card available... OK
Retrieving information from 01.org...
...

Note that the i915 module was not found. I run the rest of the intel updater but it didn't install anything.

If I boot with the 4.10.0-35 kernel it says this;
Checking if Intel graphics card available...
  • checking for i915 module in /sys/module
  • i915 module found
Checking if Intel graphics card available... OK
Retrieving information from 01.org...
...

And with this -35 kernel the video is smooth and fast.

To see if this is an issue related to dkms as Kai suggests, Please attach "dpkg -l".

In the meantime, I'll build the next test kernel.

This one fixed an issue for me

Looks like it was not built on upgrade somehow.

Installed latest test kenel:

sudo dpkg -i
linux-headers-4.10.0-36_4.10.0-36.40-lp1723174Commit582945ec835e_all.deb
linux-headers-4.10.0-36-generic_4.10.0-36.40-lp1723174Commit582945ec835e_amd64.deb
linux-image-4.10.0-36-generic_4.10.0-36.40-lp1723174Commit582945ec835e_amd64.deb
linux-image-extra-4.10.0-36-generic_4.10.0-36.40-lp1723174Commit582945ec835e_amd64.deb

then executed also:

sudo apt install --reinstall i915-4.11.6-4.10.0-dkms

(and finally executed also the intel Graphics Update).

Now 4.10.0-36 works fine; and also the 4.10.0-37 now works fine!!! [SOLVED]

So the problem seem to be just the automatic rebuild of the i915 module
during the upgrade (not a kernel issue but just the package setup automatic
procedure).

As per the last comment by Emanuele Cisbani (cisba), I re-installed 4.10.0-37 (the original source of video problems with synaptic.

Then did: sudo apt install --reinstall i915-4.11.6-4.10.0-dkms

And the problem is now fixed. :-)

I also ran the intel Graphics Update which didn't perform any actual updates - none needed,
