Bug Description

I installed "Synaptic Package Manager", but I can not start it. (Japanese environment)

Steps to reproduce
---
1. In "Software", search "Synaptic Package Manager" and install it.
2. Click "Show Application" at the bottom of the launcher. Start "Synaptic Package Manager".
3. Enter the password.
When it is normal, "Synaptic Package Manager" starts, but it does not start. Nothing happens.

---
1. I clicked "Show application" at the bottom of the launcher. "Terminal" started up.
2. In "Terminal", I entered "sudo synaptic".
3. I entered my password. The following error occurs and does not start.

This a wayland security feature, not working with pkexec, which synaptic (and other app) is using.
This will be worked on later, with the next 18.04 release.

The actual workaround is the open an x session, instead of a wayland one (ubuntu default), or follow the thread explanation below:

Thank you!
In "Terminal", I entered the following.
$ xhost +si:localuser:root
$ synaptic-pkexec

"Synaptic" has started.

This also affects me. I'm using Ubuntu 17.10 with default GUI setup. It looks like XWayland is running. I entered the xhost command as suggested by ichro furuya above and that resolved the issue. Personally the xhost shouldn't be required. The installation should arrange the security so I don't have to do this.

@david braun,

1. Please notice that this bug report is a duplicate of bug #1712089. The developers will probably focus on that bug report, not this one.

2. See this link for more details on how to work around this issue with Wayland,

https://askubuntu.com/questions/961967/why-dont-gksu-gksudo-or-launching-a-graphical-application-with-sudo-work-with-w/961978#961978

3. If I understand correctly, the next version of Ubuntu, 18.04 LTS will not use Wayland as standard. You can test how it works (and take part in debugging to help the development team). The daily iso file is found at the ISO testing tracker,

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/384/builds/168632/testcases
