Bug Description

Only happens sometimes.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Take screenshot
2. Select "copy to clipboard"
3. Close screenshot window
4. Open GIMP
5. Paste (Ctrl + v) into GIMP window

Result:

Sometimes getting the attached error message from GIMP that there is no image in the clipboard. I think it is related to keeping the screenshot window open or not. If I keep it open, I never get this error. Only sometimes if I close the window.

With this steps I could reproduce on Ubuntu MATE 16.04. So, I could imagine that this issue might be considered a security feature.

Thanks for testing and reproducing!

Why might this be considered a security feature?

I don't see the "feature" and use in there.

IINM, GNOME2 did offered "Clipboard management" via "gnome-settings-daemon" package. I believe GNOME2 to MATE transition somehow lost this default behavior.

Where should I address this best in an attempt to restore it?

I find this a critically lacking feature and very unintuitive for new users.

They press "Copy to clipboard" in the understanding it's stored in the
clipboard but then it's suddenly not there. This is very confusing.

Indeed, MATE does have msd-clipboard-manager as a plugin of mate-settings-daemon. And looking at dconf editor, org.mate.SettingsDaemon.plugins.clipboard is active by default.

While being able to reproduce "GIMP Message There is no image data in the clipboard to paste." at the same time, for example, Krita is more than happy to paste image from the clipboard.

AFAICT, image does exist in the clipboard and this bug should be made against GIMP project.

Will do some more testing and if necessary, report it to GIMP.

Thanks!

Isn't this related to Wayland security feature?

Clipboard content is forgotten if you close the app (in this case the
screenshot tool) before pasting.
