Bug Description

Since upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 access to samba share is denied. (I have tried client use spnego = no, client NTLMv2 auth = no, allow nt4 crypto = yes, require strong key = no without success). Now samba update fail.
Note: New machines with new installations of Ubuntu 16.04 can't join the domain.
The primary domain controller and the backup domain controller are Windows NT 4.0 server service pack 6.

Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.

It looks like smbd is failing to start, but the reason isn't clear.

If this is still happening after the latest updates, could you please try a few things:

- sudo apt -f install
- sudo systemctl restart smbd.service nmbd.service

And lets go from there.

Hello

The samba package install problem do not occur anymore.
But since upgrade to 16.04 each access to a samba share need a authentication and scheduled tasks fails. (After upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 the same problem occurred for several month before been solved by a update.)
I removed the machine from the domain an tried to join again. The join fail.

Below copy of some commands and the terminal outputs :

Thanks for getting back to us.

Since this is a different issue, could you please file a new samba bug with the contents of your comment #3 above?

That being said:
Failed to join domain: failed to lookup DC info for domain 'ENDUICOLOR' over rpc: Access denied

I don't have access to a NT4 domain, but let me suggest a few things:
- make sure the "hh" user has admin privileges on that domain, or privileges to add machines to the domain
- make sure the domain server can be found via nmblookup. Or set "password server = <machine name>" in smb.conf so there is no need for discovery
- you have some crypto settings in smb.conf that I'm not familiar with, but maybe they are required for the old NT style domain. I would suggest to temporarily remove them and see if it makes a difference.

What is the domain controller? It can't be NT, can it? :)

PDC and BDC are NT4.0 Service Pack 6
Yes hh is domain administrator
The PDC and BDC IP addresses are in smb.conf. net rpc join -S PDC_IP_address or PDC_name fail also.
First I tried without crypto settings and with all possible crypto settings combination. Nothing works.

There is a Bug # 1585111 : net rpc join fail on Ubuntu 16.04 on launchpad. It may be better not to add another one.

While waiting for the bug to be solved, we have no choice but to use Windows in VirtualBox.

Ok, let's continue on bug #1585111 and leave this one as "incomplete" as there is no further information about the original problem which was smbd failing to start on package upgrade.
