Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I'm reporting this as a new bug. I thought it was similar to another. Here is the other I thought it was similar to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/133192

I followed the suggestions and instructions there (disable glx and dri -- which isn't supported by this card as far as I can tell anyway) to no chance. The "ati" driver still made the screen fuzzy.

Using the Feisty CD, all was well. After upgrading to Gutsy, and then doing a fresh install from the Gutsy CD, the ati driver will cause a horizontally blurry screen. So far, I have only been able to make this go away by switching to the VESA driver.

This issue was achievable from the Gutsy LiveCD and was evident as soon as KDE started.

me@machine:/var/log$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon IGP 330M/340M/350M [1002:4337]

logs and conf will follow soon...

I just read through the Xorg.0,log and noticed that it complained about the resolution at 1280x768. It smartly corrected it.

I just tried dropping the resolution to 800x600 with 16 bit color and it is still doing the same thing: horizontally "humming" and there is a thick black line about 1-inch in from the right side of the screen.

Again, no issues if I use the vesa driver -- just slower to render.

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide.

Thanks for your report.

You can also run without any xorg.conf, resolutions etc should be detected automatically.

Would it be possible to get a photograph of the "thick black line" issue?

Can you please try the newest version from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge

Running without an xorg.conf was the same result as using the ati driver.

I will try to get a picture.

I will then try to run with the newest version you suggest.

Thanks!

Attached is a picture without flash. It shows the fuzziness of the screen.

Attached is a picture using a flash. It shows the vertical black band on the right-side of the screen. Perhaps the black band represents the amount the hsync is off?

Tormod, I'm pleased to let you know the newest version from the site you pointed me to fixes the problem for me. I can now run without an xorg.conf AND with an xorg.conf that explicitly uses the 'ati' driver.

Marvelous. Brilliant.

Many thanks.

Tormod, I want to report one more nice thing. Because the ati driver is working for this machine now, so is the power management. My screen now turns off properly for power management instead of merely going blank. I worked around this in the past by closing the lid, but now I can walk away knowing that the screen with properly turn off and this LCD won't suffer backlight burnout.

Again. Marvelous.

(I apologize in advance for this comment)

How do I install "xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.197-1ubuntu1~tormod" for ubuntu Gutsy?

I tried with "sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.197-1ubuntu1~tormod" but it couldn't find it.

I currently have 1:6.7.195 installed, but would like to get this installed as I am having the same problem on an hp ze5500en with Radeon IGT 345M

Even booting from the latest Gutsy ISO has the same result.

(see attached)

(again... sorry for posting this question here)

snacker, you may ask in IRC #ubuntu for such things. You must download the .deb from the site mentioned above, and then run:
 sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.197-1ubuntu1~tormod_i386.deb
(or double-click on the package in the file manager...)

xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.197-1 is now in Hardy and should include the fix for this bug. Please update if you are running Hardy. This version will also be included in Hardy Alpha 3, which is scheduled for release next week. If you want to test this version (or newer) in Gutsy, try the test packages from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge

If you find that this bug is not fixed with the new version in Hardy, please reopen the bug report.
