I couldn't figure it out. Eventually I reinstalled the OS, which seems to
have bypassed the issue.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

Gentlemen and (ladies),

I subscribe to this bug feed on launchpad.net in the hopes of
finding some information useful to a newbie who is having trouble with the
update manager. I have since solved my problem and am now just trying to
find my footing in using kubuntu. I am not a programmer and therefore have
no useful information to pass on to all of you at this point. Maybe at some
point I will have something useful but at this point I'm too much of a
novice. So, if you could please let me know how to unsubscribe from this
post he would be greatly appreciated as it is clogging my inbox. It is
somewhat interesting to read about all of your efforts in trying to improve
the experience of using this great OS. However, at this point I would like
to let you all get on with your work and for me to get on with mine. My
primary consideration at this point is figuring out how to use certain of my
essential programs with the Wine interface. Thanks for including me in your
communications up to this point, but please help me unsubscribe from this
feed.

 Thanks, <email address hidden>
