black screen after log in (desktop does not load)

Bug Description
system: linux mint 18 cinnamon 3.0.7+sarah 64-bit kernel version: 4.4.0.38, hw: intel core i5-3337u, 8gb ram, 120 gb flash drive, radeon hd 7500m/7600m
the screen remains black after i log in to my account. this does not happen every time i log in but often. the linux is installed on an encrypted flash drive.
