Bug Description

Because of missing executable file /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxNetNAT - Internet access in "NAT network" mode dosn't work. This is not a default option "NAT".

Normally it should run this file like: /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxNetNAT --ip-address 10.0.2.1 --netmask 255.255.255.0 --network NatNetwork --trunk-type whatever

But without this file, guest only get IP Address from DHCP server and it can't connect to Internet. Communication between guest works very well.

After uninstalling all virtualbox* packages and installing package (5.1.4-110228~Ubuntu~trusty) from VirtualBox.org - /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxNetNAT connect to Internet very well.

Affected: 4.3.36-dfsg-1+deb8u1ubuntu1.14.04.1
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
Release: 14.04

What you expected to happen: Connect to Internet with "NAT network" option enabled

What happened instead: Internet connection with "NAT network" enabled dosn't work

This bug was fixed in the package virtualbox - 5.1.4-dfsg-4

virtualbox (5.1.4-dfsg-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * Try to add VBox missing binaries (LP: #1621890).
  * Merge the VBox.sh with the upstream one

This bug is not fixed in Ubuntu 18.04

Nat Network in Ubuntu 18.04 doesn't work, as already happened in Ubuntu 16.04

Virtual machines in Nat Network can see each other (ping), but they can't access to internet.

When I install Virtualbox from Oracle repositories then it works properly

Alex, this is about a missing binary, please open a new bug instead, or try vbox in 18.10, that contains lots of NAT fixes.

OK. I think it was the same bug or, at least, the same problem. In Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, NatNetwork don't let the virtual machines access internet, even if the file /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxNetNAT exist. But I am going to open a new bug.

It's not an option for me. There are 200 computers at my job with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS , and I am just a worker, not the IT administrator.

At home I can install a new distro to fix a problem, but not at work.

At the schools of my country there are thousands and thousands of computers working with distros build on top of Ubuntu LTS. We can't move from LTS so easily. If there is a problem, we expect and help the problem to be fix in Ubuntu LTS.

Thanks a lot
