Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

The problem:

I am using a cups server (debian etch), which uses encryption and local (on the server) authentication to allow users printing.

When using windows, I can simply add the printer using the following URL:

https://server:port/classes/printer

Then I can change the authentication settings to my username on the server and it's password.

I was not able to figure out, how to add the printer in ubuntu using system-config-printer.

Tried to enter the URL with
  - ipp://user:pwd@server:port/printer.

So I think there should be an easy way to specify different authentication credentials for a remote printer queue in system-config-printer.

I've just tried adding the printer in fedora 8, and it works by adding
  ipp://user:pwd@server:port/printer

when comparing the printers.conf file entries,
Ubuntu does not add the
  AuthInfoRequired username,password
line.

But even when using the printers.conf from fedora and restarting cups it does not work.

This should work correctly in 0.9.90: enter the URI without authentication details, and if the remote queue requires authentication you should automatically get a password prompt when you submit a job.

At my work I need use of a Xerox Wordcenter 7428 PCL5 firmware that require a username but no password on the ipp URI.
Unfortunately I found no way of getting Ubuntu to properly authenticate to the printer as the printer accept anonymous sessions but refuse to print them. So all I am able to get are ink levels.

This bug need to be reopened and investigated. Will provide required information if someone asks for it.

Hi guys,
@Lea, I would suggest that you open a fresh bug report for that problem.
I believe this bug report is a Wishlist item for an easier way to allow to authenticate, i.e. with a dialog box in system-config. If that is the case, it might help to also open an Idea on Brainstorm http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com .
Reopening bugs that have been closed for over a year is a little pointless (if not for the sake of spamming people). Thank you.
