Bug Description

I don't know if this is a desktop issue, a font server issue, a graphics driver issue, a kernel issue, or what, so I'll post it here and ask to be advised if there's a more appropriate place.

Upon resuming to the desktop from suspend, all text fonts disappear from the displayed windows. The programs in those windows still function. Logging out and back in clears the problem. The lock screen from resume is not affected. This occurs on two different machines, though they both use the same CPU/Graphics.

For me, it only happens after resuming from suspend (and only occasionally). Also, fonts in xterm are not affected (but those in mate-terminal are, along with most of the rest of the interface).

Having the same issue on a Gigabyte P34G V2 laptop. Also Mint 18 upgraded from 17.3, also only happens occasionally on resuming from suspend. The affected text varies: sometimes it's the taskbar and menu text, sometimes dialog windows, sometimes terminals (often more than one affected area). Firefox text has never been affected.

Switching the X11 acceleration method from sna (default) to uxa by adding

   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"

to the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf seems to have solved the problem, although (a) it's a bit hard to tell as the problem was/is intermittent, and (b) there is probably some performance cost to the switch (although it's not noticeable to me).

Apparently the alternative (which I have not tried) is to keep sna acceleration but to add

   COGL_ATLAS_DEFAULT_BLIT_MODE=framebuffer

to /etc/environment (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/intel_graphics#SNA_issues)

I can confirm this is also a problem with linux mint 18 cinnamon. I took a couple of screen shots you can see here:

My graphics hardware:

Card-1: Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Mars XTX [Radeon HD 8790M]

I will give the above workarounds a try.

One thing I have found that "fixes" it without logging out, change the default font to size 8. Sizes 9, 10, and 11 all have problems but 8 and 12 seem to work.

I have the similar symptoms under LM 18 Cinnamon. I close my laptop lid to Suspend the system, and later when I resume the system text is messed up or missing. The password dialog has strange and missing text, and when I type my password the "dots" do not appear. Once I get logged on almost all menus (app & main) have no text. When I click Shut Down no text appears on any of the option buttons.

Doing <Alt>+<F2> and typing "r" to reset Cinnamon does not fix this. Removing the Hibernate option did not fix this. I don't see anything is the system logs that looks like a smoking gun.

Because my display is 1920 x 1080 I need the panel and menu fonts larger to be readable. Under Accessibility → Visual I have Large text turned ON. In addition in Linux Fonts → Font Settings → Text scaling factor I changed it from 1.0 to 1.3 (130%). I had made these changes under LMC 17.3 without any problems. There is an option to double the size of everything on extreme resolution screens. I tried it, and it was too much for my screen.

This happens several times a week. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

PS: Does anyone from LM look at these bug reports?
