Bug Description

First, this is my system specs:

Intel D875PBZ mother board
2.4 northwood
1gb ram
ATI 1600pro 256mb
19in HP w1907 monitor

I have tried all of the fixes for this "Blank Screen" on boot up from the live cd and nothing has worked to date. Just to make it very clear that I have not installed Gutsy nor do I plan to (YET). I just want to boot from the live CD and so fare non of the "FIXES" has worked. No matter what I do I just get the "Monitor going to sleep" message and thats it. The boot up itself seems to be going just fine up to the point of it going into the desktop, (sorry if that is not the correct phrase as I am new to Linux).

Just very, very frustrated at this point as I was hoping that Ubuntu wood but the ticket to get out of the Windows World. I just want to take is for a spin first before I try to install it just to see what it is like. I have herd nothing but good things about Ubuntu but at this point i am just stuck!

Hi,

could you have a look at the gutsy release notes : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyGibbon/ReleaseNotes

in particular at : Blank screen with some ATI hardware
People with ATI display adapters may get a blank screen when loading X due to the driver being unable to initialize certain hardware. Upstream is working on it, and hopefully we'll be able to release an update for 7.10 soon after the release. In the meantime, add 'Option "LVDSBiosNativeMode" "false"' to the driver section of xorg.conf. Bug #132716

could you try the workaroudn and report back whether this worked for you or not ?

    thanks,

      Koen

Thank you Koen for getting back we me.

I have found a fix for the problem, I got a new monitor!!!!!

I had an HP 19in LCD, I exchanged that for an LG 22in with a higher
resolution of 1680 by 1050 as apposed to the HP's of 1440x990. Now the Live
CD boots just fine!

Hi,

I'm glad you found a solution (and now have a bigger screen :-) ) and hope you're enjoying Gutsy.

would it still be possible for you to test with the old display and the workaround suggested in bug#132716 (Option LVDSBiosNativeMode) ?
if that would work than I can set this bug as a duplicate of that one

otherwise I'll need to set the bug as invalid or try to get more information about the problem you had with the old display

   thanks,

      Koen

Koen,

Unfortunately, I do not have that monitor any longer. But it did seem at
the time that the issue was specifically related to that screen
resolution of 1440x900 as the only thing that changed is the monitor it
self and the fact that is has a higher resolution of 1680x1050. I did
try F4 to change the resolution but 1440x900 is not an option on that
menu.

Also, it was not just ubuntu I was having problems with but kubuntu,
mandriva, and fedora as well; they all had the blank screen. Once I
changed monitors, all of the live cd's I tried booted just fine.

If there is anything else I can do just let me know!

Hi,

I’ll mark this bug as a duplicate of bug 132716 as it’s very likely it’s the same problem

  thanks,
