Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Activating the blur on system bell causes the blur to make what seems like compiz losing acceleration. Everything gets painfully slow.

To reproduce this on my system I just activate blur on system bell. Start up the gnome-terminal and perform a tab-completion. Et voila!

My system is a dell xps m1210 with an intel m945.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

The configuration utility to enable blur does not seem to be available on the live cd I'am afraid.

Sorry for my hasty response. I found how to install it...

This is now for alpha6, the problem persists.
I also discovered the following:

If enabling motion blur, the starting it (default ctrl+F12) it has the same symptom. However, disabling the plugin will cause the system to regain speed and it might therefore seem like my graphics card is lacking acceleration for whatever blur uses.

This is however not the case with the system bell, it needs an X restart.

Please test with Intrepid, and if the issue still exists, please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and a copy of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log from after reproducing the problem.

I've tested it on Intrepid, using the live CD and upgrading the system with the latest updates.

I couldn't find the system-bell-blur config this time so I tried reproducing it using blur window and motion blur instead. I tried reproducing twice. First it bugged out right away, second time I had too fiddle a while for it to happen. Motion blur does not pose too much problem, but window blur, when it kicks in, is much worse than before. All changes in graphics lead to black areas with a few bright pixels in them. Restarting X (the hard way) does not disable the configuration and I can't figure out how to disable it afterwards since the graphical interface is rendered unusable. Beware of wrecked systems here!!!

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:

Tested on Jaunty Alpha-2 with latest updates. Same issues as before.

Can you let us know if this issue still occurs with the Jaunty release? If so, please also see if the 2.7.0 driver resolves it:

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
