Bug Description

Hi,

I have installed Unity8 on my 16.04 laptop, not a fresh install.

The session starts fine and the scopes window shows, but it's empty. Using the bottom edge button I can see that most scopes are not installed, including the App scope (but also Today, Nearby, Ubuntu Store, etc). There are about 10 scopes installed, things like Amazon or Wikipedia, and those do work.

There are a few apps in the launcher, but I'm also affected by bug #1535058, meaning I can't launch anything.

Let me know what kind of info I can provide and where to find it!

Sounds similar, but also different to bug 1577639 that I logged recently.

They are simply not installed - you can get the Apps scope by installing unity-scope-click, the rest you should then be able to install from the store, provided they are built for your architecture.

That said, we should probably seed unity-scope-click with the desktop session.

I don't know why unity-scope-click got uninstalled, I'm pretty sure I had it at some point (I remember wondering what it was)… Maybe during the 16.04 update?

Anyway it was indeed the problem! I'll give Unity8 another go when I'm able to launch apps!

this may or may not be useful info for debug, just sharing.
I've been helping someone get setup.
I helped them install the unity-scope-click, which took care of the problem.
however, while debugging another issue we discovered they had an odd version of ubuntu-app-launch (likely from an old silo), upon installing the correct version of ubuntu-app-launch the apps-scope went missing and required reinstalling unity-scope-click again.

Fabio just admitted he's using ubuntu-app-launch and /separately/ has also reported that his unity-scope-click is invisible (but installed) -> bug 1603186
