Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted the 16.04 installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that this could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you choose the "use entire disk" guided install option.

Changed in grub-installer (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

Excellent! Thank you for the reply. I am new to Ubuntu and Linux and there
is a learn curve. Based on some other articles that I have read it looks
like what I should do is start from scratch and install Ubuntu first to get
grub in the partition tables first. Then install Windows afterwards. I was
try to avoid this and was attempting to install Ubuntu on a system that had
an existing win 10 install.
An advise on installation of OSs on separate HDD / devices? Would be
helpful as most docs are geared toward installation of OSs on one
partitioned drive.
Thanks.

Actually it is best to install Windows first, then Ubuntu. The only rub here is that you installed Windows in bios mode, then tried to install Ubuntu in EFI mode, and did not heed the warning that you can not do this, and asked if you wanted to install Ubuntu in bios mode instead, so that it would be able to correctly dual boot with Windows. Simply choose the cancel option at the warning to switch back to installing in bios mode, and it should work fine.

Got it! Thanks you for your assistance. My other solution should be to
convert my windows partition from MBR to efi, then I should be able to
install Ubuntu without issue. Thanks.
