If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

Hi Jo

Actually this happened from the very beginning.

   - First wifi setup OK, after reboot, no access.
   - Same story after some modifications coming from the French wifi forum

I had some issues to install the latest upstream kernel.

In order to give you more info, you have to know that it was the same problem on 14.04 (different kernel).
That's the reason why I've switched to 16.04 which is in the near future the latest LTS.

Hi everyone

I do my best to progress

Sorry Jo, I did not read correctly your post. you were asking for the latest v4.6 kernel and I returned 3.14.4 (which is what I understood by UPstream).

Anyway, this morning
- I've run the latest live-key version w/ update & upgrade, in order to start on a clean version w/o modifications from various trials
- I've downloaded and installed linux-headers-4.6.0-040600rc2-generic_4.6.0-040600rc2.201604031130_amd64 (tried but failed)

BUT I faced the same problem

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-headers-4.6.0-040600rc2-generic:
linux-headers-4.6.0-040600rc2-generic depends on linux-headers-4.6.0-040600rc2;
however: Package linux-headers-4.6.0-040600rc2 is not installed

I'm stuck to this dependency issue. I read your link carefully but did not find any clue ??!!
How can I get through?

FYI, I join the present uname -a (where the bug is still "active" : NO WIFI)

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 4.4.0-16-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 24 22:38:01 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thx for your help

Hi

I see my status as incomplete and the bug will expire in 55 days.
I did my best to give you the required information but, as I already said, I'm stuck on a part of it, w/ dependencies issue.

On top of that, I gave some kind of "back door answer" saying that this bug is
also present on release 14.04
w/ a different kernel from 16.04 which was the question.

And this is the same situation on Asus laptop PCs, so I think it's general

I hope you'll remove this incomplete status in order that this bug is taken into account and treated normally because wifi is essential on laptops.

I'm willing to buy 10 PCs for my IT club to promote Linux, but if wifi doesn't work, I'm afraid the students will stay w/ W10 ... unfortunately.

Another piece of information. I just reinstalled Ub 16.04 from yesterday's daily version. I started w/ RJ45 connected and finally I got wifi from my box.
After reboot w/o RJ45 connected, same story, no wifi again !

Hope it can help

Some additional news.

I've asked to a PC integrator company to do the following job on any recent
laptop. The brand is not important to me, I just want wifi in operation.

From a W10 UEFI laptop PC, they have installed, in dual boot, Ubuntu 16.04,
no problem, but even them could not acivate wifi.

they did the trial on Asus and Toshiba PCs.

So I guess there is a problem with Ubuntu wifi on recent UEFI PCs, don't
you think so?
Then it would be a key issue for the people who buy a laptop, because wifi
is compulsory.

Thank you to think it over, because so far I'm stuck with the HP PC and
need to switch to W10 Wifi which is not my objective

Another new element

My daughter's got a rather old HP PC (Compaq 6510b, released in April 2009) which works beautifully with LTS version 10.04.
Unfortunately this version is not maintained any more, so I proposed her to install the latest one 16.04 32b.
And same problem again, Wifi does not work.

I've got a strong suspicion that there is a major problem with wifi on this version because:

I (or a PC integrator) have tried on PCs 64 bits UEFI
HP, Asus, Toshiba and NO wifi

I've tried on PC 32 bits non UEFI
Compaq 6510b and NO wifi

As a summary: Wifi does not work on PCs 32 or 64 bits UEFI or not
I let you conclude.

Thx for your help because it would be a pity to have to switch to W10 on wifi because this is precisely what I would like to avoid!

Finally I could install the new kernel after an ultimate update & upgrade.
Here is the result:

on the old PC: no change, no wifi

impossible to activate wifi

I rebooted
wifi OK

I made a stop/start
impossible to activate wifi

I made sure I was in 4.6
$uname -a

On top of that, same as with the previous kernel, I cannot start the W10

1) $ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

2) Wifi is still not working and still OK on W10

gerard, in order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically requested to do so.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

Strange result!!

1- I first rebooted from 4.6 (current kernel installed from bug team recommendation) to restart on 4.7
2- wifi still did not work, but after turning bluetooth off it worked!
3- to make sure I powered off/on
4- but then, still doesn't work even though no bluetooth on
5- I've tried to reboot instead of power off/on, but no difference

This is a really tricky affair! work once in some cases then nothing

Despite this, to keep this relevant to upstream, could you please test the latest mainline kernel (4.7-rc4) and advise to the results?

I stick to this post and forget winux.
I installed the 4.7 kernel, but no change

in order to bring you as much info as I can, I did the following tests and the result is very strange!!

after installing new kernel 4.7, RJ45 connected
I rebooted a firt time (on 4.7)
took RJ45 out
no wifi

I connected RJ45 to install Chromium
rebooted a 2nd time, RJ45 out, no wifi

I rebooted a 3rd time, RJ45 out, wifi was visible (see the picture below)
http://i68.tinypic.com/29479ly.png

I did not connect to my wifi box (no wifi password declaration)
rebooted
no wifi again

I shut-off / shut-on power supply
wifi is back
I've been connected to it (see picture below)
http://i64.tinypic.com/fuumat.png

I shut-off / shut-on power supply again to check a 2nd time
NO wifi

I reboot
NO wifi, same

Finally, as usual, when I do a major change (reinstall, but no improvement this time) or upstream kernel, I've got Wifi just ONCE which means my card is recognized by Ubuntu, but never again.
Looks like a sort of flag is marked somewhere which no longer allows wifi

Hello Christopher

Maybe you forgot me from the time being, but I wanted to keep you informed
about the evolution of this issue.
Actually it works now, on this particular PC, after having installed
version 16.10 non LTS unfortunately.
But still not OK on 16.04 even after updates, s
I'm very pleaded of this evolution.
The only drawback is that I always start wifi off, whatever the situation
when I closed.

I think this bug is resolved for 95%
Have a nice day

Ok Christopher, Thx for your answer
In order not to reinstall too often, I suggest to do it once the 17.04 is
released, i.e. in about one month.
I'll keep you informed.
Thx for your concern

Hi Christopher

As I already said, but surprising not stated here:
- I've installed 17.04 beta one week ago
- wifi works beautifully

I could say
- solved on the "17.04 non LTS"
- BUT not solved on the "16.04 LTS" which I would like to use till the end of support (another 4 years)

What is the difference that made it work on 17.04 but still not on the 16.04?
Anyway we made a big step forward!!

Thanks to the development team that accomplish miracles !!!
I love Ubuntu and convinced a lot of people moving to it

gerard, I am closing this report because as per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1565106/comments/51 the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu.

If using 16.04, one would want to use the enablement kernel as noted in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack for later kernel fixes.

Hi Christopher

Are you sure?
Because as far as I understood, 16.04 is a LTS and shoud last 5 years,
actually I'm running 17.04 which is a STS (9 months), meaning that myself
and others will have to install 18.04.

I say others because yesterday I wanted to install 16.04 on a friend's PC
(an Asus), but same Pb as on the HP, no wifi, I had then to install 17.04,
but he/I will have to install 18.04 as well, is it a normal procedure not
to reverse the bug fix to the LTS till this version is supported ?

Have a nice day anyway and again congratulation to the team
