I'm wrong.
3.19.0-51 is the last version I found where the touchpad works.
All higher versions (including 3.19.0-56) are not ok

Touchpad is SYN1B7D:01 06CB:2991 and SYN1B7D:01 06CB:74D9
I don't know where the second type number comes from. The devices are Acer B115. Acer has upgraded the firmware of the touchpads due to erratic cursor behaviour. Next time I looked, the 2991 seemed to have changed to 74D9.

Same here with an Acer ES1-131. The touchpad works fine with 3.19.0-51 (14.04 LTS), stopped working after the update to Kernel 3.19.0-56.

I am on 4.4.0-15.31 and my device is a Asus UX32VD laptop. My touchpad also stopped working. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 and installed the 4.4 kernel through the linux-image-generic-lts-xenial package, and it's been working without problems up until yesterday.

I was able to regain some functionality using this solution: http://askubuntu.com/questions/262287/synaptic-touchpad-on-laptop-not-working

But the touchpad remains sluggish and scrolling does not work.

I can confirm Zanna's solution for the Acer B115
apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-xenial linux-headers-generic-lts-xenial, resulting in kernel 4.4.0-15-generic solved the problem.
So the 4.4.0.-13.7 and 3.19.0-56 are not ok, the 4.4.0-15-generic #31~14.04.1 is ok

Hi there,
I would like to add further details on this issue I'm experiencing on an Acer Aspire ES1-711-P0HA. It has been worked fine up to kernel 3.19.0-51, then no working touchpad from 3.19.0-56 onwards.

Following two excerpts of "dmesg" and "syslog" for each kernel 3.19.0-51 and 3.19.0-58. As you can see the ELAN0501:00 04F3:300B touchpad device is recognized from the -51 kernel, whereas the -58 kernel times out the 80860F41:00 controller and isn't be able to initialize the device driver.
For sake of completness I have to report just one unrepeated event where the touchpad has worked with kernel -56.
A last detail, that I found at least unusual, is that the kernel 3.19.0-51 has been compiled with gcc version 4.8.4, whereas the last kernel version 3.19.0-58 has been compiled with the previous gcc version 4.8.2.
