Please see screenshots, esp workspace switcher, in these two images. Bringing up workspace switcher preferences just brings up minimal control panel with rows and columns fields that don't work properly!

Hi Aron,
since Compiz manages windows different from metacity, it might be a feature.
Here the workspace switcher is also very tiny and properties, like you wrote, are only rows and columns, when Compiz is activated normal.
With the cursor on a free space on the screen and by scrolling the mousewheel it moves to all workspaces without clicking on it. With a right click (or shortcuts) at the window bar I can move the window to different positions and 16 workspaces, but they are not shown in the applet.
I had installed compiz manager first and after gnome compiz manager, with each while using it four freezes, after uninstalling none. They are not official and latter is alpha.
When Compiz is activated as Extra, for cube, you should change in the configuration editor /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/hsize >> to 4
and
/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/number_of_desktops >> to 1
which only means per definition one cube has four sites.

Hope this helps you a little.

Pardon me Bruce, I don`t understand this formulation "on other about another".
First, I just wanted to help and where did I comment on other bugs, which bugs?
Please help me there to get your point, thanks.
btw. here is a review about Compiz mentioning the workspace switcher

By coincidence I found out with another bug #131526, that with a Human theme the workspace switcher shows again normally, with or without Compiz, Columns 4, Rows 1.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Hi Pedro,
I'm out of the country (and away from my desktop) for the next three weeks -
let me know if it will help if I test for you then and I'll set a reminder
to do so if it will.

Regards,

Aron

I did not have this problem in Hardy but am experiencing it in Intrepid. If I have workspaces in more than one row, eg. 2 rows, 2 columns, and run "compiz --replace" the switcher ends up with four workspaces all in one row on the top, and nothing in the bottom row. Screenshot attached.

I am having this issue. I asked about it in the Forums (here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1074789) and got no response.

With "Visual Effects: None", the Workspace Switcher Preferences has the selections:
 - "Show only the current workspace" or "Show all the workspaces in N rows", and
 - "Number of workspaces"
I have 4 workspaces set up to be shown in 2 rows. I get a 2x2 display in the Workspace Switcher, with 4 active workspaces.

If I switch to "Visual Effects: Normal", the Workspace Switcher Preferences window changes to offer only:
 - "Number of rows"
 - "Number of columns"
The default is 4 columns and 1 row. I get a 2x4 display in the Workspace Switcher, with the upper 1x4 active and the lower 1x4 unused.

If I switch it to 2 columns, 2 rows, as I had it previously, I get a display that is sized for 4x2 in the Workspace Switcher, where the upper 2x2 is active and the lower 2x2 is unused (see attached image).

I haven't found a way to configure my desktop with "Visual Effects: Normal" or "Advanced" such that the Workspace Switcher displays the workspaces without an unused bottom half.

I am running Intrepid, with gnome-panel 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu2.1 and compiz 1:0.7.8-0ubuntu4.1.

I fixed the problem setting /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/number_of_desktops to the current number of desktop I have. It is has value of 1 I still have 8 desktops but the workspace switcher applet use only the top half of its height. After setting number_of_desktops to 8 the applet uses its full height.

maykel

Changing /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/number_of_desktops with gconf-editor has no effect for me, even after a restart.

I had the very same problem as Chris since Fiesty.. sometimes it worked mostly not. Now it works nicely. Thanks again! :)
(had 2x2 after compiz 2 sections... top was 1x4 or 2x2 bottom was empty, now it's as it should be.. 2x2)

Just find out, that after this "fix" I have 4 desktops... each 4x.. so in result I have 16 desktops :-/
For instance I move window to the Right desktop. I am unable to get there using ctrl+alt+arrow. I have to click on workspace switcher to move to another desktop (with it's own 4 desktops). This is not what I wanted to have.. :-/
I want only 1 virtual desktop.. divided into 2x2...

I have the same issue as Michal on Jaunty: each square on the workspace switcher represents a "desktop" with four "workspaces"; the desktops are reachable by clicking on the switcher whereas the workspaces are reachable by keyboard shortcuts. The behavior is completely different from that of the workspace switcher with "Visual Effects: Normal".

I get this behavior with /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/number_of_desktops set to both 1 and 4.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The package your reporting is updated and the issue should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/.
