Bug Description

I am having a very strange problem. When booting, closing or even changing screen resolution I get weird lines and circles on the screen, something like a television with a bad signal. Changing resolution is not possible.

I discovered some memory errors using memtest. How can I fix them?
Note: I've been running debian for more than a month, and only getting the sound right was a problem.
Same in feisty, no problems other than the sound.

changing the resolution garbles the screen.

I have the same error on Ubuntu Gutsy, desktop PC. I did not have that apparently on previous versions of Ubuntu.

With 8.04, the problem seems to have disappeared. The only complaint I have is that the screen resolution doesn't go higher than 800x600, however my monitor is capable of displaying 1024x768.

With 8.10 (alpha 5), however, my computer doesn't even start X. (see bug #271426)

Lieven: what does 'xrandr -q' output? Also, please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log from 8.04.

Right below is the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log from 8.04.1.
I assume that the output of 'xrandr -q' is still from 7.10? If it is (please confirm), I'll have to reinstall 7.10.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Xubuntu release? (9.10) Thanks in advance.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The package your reporting is updated and should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
