I just did a fresh install of ubuntu-mate 16.04-alpha2, then I updated the kernel to 4.4.0-2-generic.
Reboot, sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. And bingo, the error popped up.

Changed in lightdm (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → High

This is another fallout similar to bug 1540568. Unfortunately mate alpha-2 has that broken init-system-helpers version (1.26ubuntu1). To clean up, run

  sudo update-rc.d mountkernfs.sh defaults
  sudo update-rc.d dbus defaults
  sudo apt-get -f install

Changed in lightdm (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Invalid
