Bug Description

Computer: EEEpc 701
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)
Native resolution 800x480
linux-image-4.3.0-2-generic=4.3.0-2.11

Upgraded to the Xenial.

Happens every time when using Linux 4.3.0-2. As soon as X starts over half of the screen is messed (left side of the screen). Switching to the virtual terminal doesn't help, same area is messed in text mode.

Couple of workarounds:
*Booting Linux 4.2.0-22-generic
*Connecting external (VGA) monitor. Now both (internal+external) are working. External can be disconnected then.
*From grub boot to recovery (kernel 4.3.0-2), then resume. Now screen is working, but resolution is 640x480.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.4 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Kernel version 4.4.0-040400rc8-generic works.

I also tested kernel 4.3.0-5-generic from repository. Bug didn't trigger but it automatically forced lower resolution (640x480).

Aapo Rantalainen, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 4.3 to 4.4-rc8 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your release. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting.

After the fix commit (not kernel version) has been identified, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

Seems Xenial will be released with Kernel v4.4 [ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/Newsletter/2015-12-15 ].
And older Ubuntu releases will use v4.2 (which is not affected by this bug).
Maybe it is useless to track this v4.3 issue (specially if no one else encounters it).
