Bug Description

Binary package hint: scim

Using gutsy, I just noticed that if scim is running and japanese language (anthy) is selected, thunderbird will crash when I create a new message.

Steps to reproduce:
1. ctrl-space to activate scim, select japanese (anthy)
2. start thunderbird.
3. ctrl-m to create a new message.

It always crashes following these steps. I've recreated both ~/.scim and ~/.mozilla-thunderbird, without any changes.

If scim is running but isn't active (i.e. no ctrl-space), everything works properly. If I activate it while typing a new message, it doesn't crash immediately, but does when I send the message.

I've noticed a similar problem in firefox - once scim is active, ctrl-n to open a new window will cause a crash. I haven't seen similar problems in other programs, but I don't use scim much in anything else.

Using thunderbird 2.0.0.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 and scim 1.4.7-1ubuntu2

I don't use thunderbird, but I just tested firefox in Gutsy, and I can't
reproduce this bug with scim-pinyin. It may be a problem with
scim-anthy, it may be something specific to you configurations, but
currently I don't have time to investigate.

Hmm...

Now it seems to be working again. Curious. Maybe I had updated something and not restarted or something like that? Or else another update in the past two days fixed the problem.

I guess it can be closed!

Anyway, closing as suggested. Please continue to report any other bugs you may find, thanks.

Hi Ming!

Yes, thanks, the problem with Firefox and scim is exactly as Jon-o Addleman described it. If scim-anthy is "on", then in Firefox typing cntrl-n to open a new window (or selecting "open new window" from the right-click menu) immediately causes Firefox to crash and close. But if scim-anthy is "off", then this behavior does not occur.

Hi,

I reconfirm the problem, exactly as described above, with both Thunderbird and Firefox in 7.10. There seems to be some discussion going in this direction over here at the Japanese forum (http://forum.ubuntulinux.jp/viewtopic.php?id=881), and they suggest adding the Japanese repository (deb http://archive.ubuntulinux.jp/ubuntu-ja gutsy/) to the sources file.

Having done that, and checking for updates with Update Manager, it updates scim, anthy and the Japanese localization pack. After doing this, the problem is gone! So I guess the Japanese team fixed the bug, whatever it was, in their version.

On fully updated Gutsy, reproduceable every time :

If (and only if) SCIM Anthy is on, then the following crashes Thunderbird:
- Creating a new message
- Saving a message
- Opening a draft
- Opening an received email (inbox)
- Creating a subfolder
- Opening the addressbook
- Opening "Help>About"
- I haven't tried everything, but pretty much everything

Example of the "Help>About": the "About" pop-up window appears quickly, grey and empty, and Thunderbird crashes immediately.
No visible effect on SCIM.
A workaround is obviously to turn SCIM off whenever performing a Thunderbird action other than edition.

Good luck,
Nicolas Raoul

With SCIM on, I tried to launch the following programs:
- Firefox: opens the window briefly and then crashes.
- Thunderbird: opens the window, which looks good and responsive but crashes for every action described in my 2007-11-18 post.
- Gnome-terminal, korganizer, real player, XSane and presumably any other program: launch and run just fine.

Nicolas, thanks for your detailed report and follow-ups.

I believe the issue is clear enough. We only need some developer who uses scim-anthy to analyze the problem. Also, I suspect the problem is on scim-anthy or anthy instead of scim, as I use scim-pinyin in firefox without any problems.

In addition to what Nicholas noted, I would like to note that the fix Christoph Rupprecht mentioned did *not* work for me.
Although the Japanese Team's repo did update Anthy and a couple other files, Thunderbird continued to crash.

I had the same problem and found that the workaround for bug #85627 helped with this for me. Now I can open the Add-on window in firefox even if Anthy is activated, without causing a crash.

Proposed Workaround:

System -> Preferences -> SCIM Input Method Setup

FrontEnd -> Global Setup

Uncheck the 'Share the same input method among all applications' alternative.

Jason Melton, I know, it worked for me for like a week, then somehow it started crashing again after another anthy update (not exactly sure about that though).

Installed versions:

scim-anthy 1.2.4-1ubuntu2
firefox 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu1

If it still occurs on an upgraded system, maybe it's some configuration thing?
Maybe try to remove .scim/ and try again?

Try without sudo. This has changed in Hardy, we use user based settings
for im-switch now, not system defaults anymore.

We believe this bug has been fixed by disabling shared input in SCIM's default configuration in version 1.4.7-3ubuntu7. If you have a custom SCIM configuration in your home directory (i.e. ~/.scim/global or .scim/config are present), please make sure any line with FrontEnd/SharedInputMethod is removed.

If this does not fix the issue, please test with Firefox 3.0 and reopen this bug if the issue is still present there. As Firefox 2 won't be improved anymore it is highly unlikely that this issue is going to be fixed there (if it ever was a bug in firefox at all).

I have the same problem even with the proposed workaround. Here is how I recreate it:
firefox (www.yahoo.co.jp) -> ctrl+a ->ctrl+c
thunderbird (or openoffice or evolution) -> ctrl+m -> ctrl+v

now my scim-panel-gtk is 96.7% of the system processes and the computer freezes
Only resolution is to drop into tty1 and run
$pkill -50 scim

Then I restart scim-panel-gtk manually

Interestingly on a manual restart I do not see any bugs. So it may have something to do with the way scim is started.... Still testing this though.

I am running intrepid with all the latest updates from the proposed and backports. I have tried removing these and removing the upgraded packages. The problem persists

If I log out of Ubuntu, and log in again with Japanese or Chinese as session language, firefox will not crash even though scim-anthy is on.

The crash only happens when i have english as session language of ubuntu.

I have also tried opening firefox from terminal with "LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 firefox" , but this makes no difference. As long the Ubuntu session is in English, the crash will occur.

For completion's sake I also tried "LANG=en_US.UTF-8 firefox" from a Japanese Ubuntu session. No crash there either. It seems like it's the language that Ubuntu uses that determines whether firefox will crash or not.

This is on an up to date Ubuntu 8.10.
