Bug Description

My Samsung X65 laptop refuses to get beyond the very first screen on an install. Says kernel panic.
It has NVIDIA Geoforce 8600M graphics and Intel 4965AGN wireless. This machine loaded 7.04 ok in VESA mode and managed the NVIDIA driver kernel upgrade OK, tho could not see the wireless card. Does exactly the same lock-up with KUBUNTU 7.10, (and similarly could cope with openSuse 10.2 but not at all with 10.3.
which has this same kernel)

Tried an on-line upgrade from Kubuntu 7.04 to 7.10 using Adept Manager which proceeded apparently without error but on reboot I get the same error message as above.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Does the error message that you reported prevent your system from working? Thanks in advance.

This was a kernel bug introduced somewhere in 2.6.20 but now fixed in 2.6.24..
had to give up on Ubuntu for this machine as it simply would not install...
now running on an updated kernel with openSuse10.3 LiveCD installer...
perhaps the next Ubuntu will incorporate this fix..

Hi David,

Thanks so much for the update. I believe the Hardy Heron Alpha2 should resolve this issue. It will have an updated version of the kernel which was most recently sync'd with the upstream 2.6.24-rc5 mainline kernel. Alpha2 is set to come out within days (around Dec. 20). If you could test with the Alpha2 LiveCD and verify if this is resolved, that would be great. I'll be sure to update this report when Alpha2 is available. Thanks!

Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 . Thanks!

shall get a chance to test this later on this week as someone borrowed the relevant machine!

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
