I must re-enter the wpa key after every (re)start of Ubuntu in order to connect to the network. This is a common problem of others too.

I'm experiencing the same problem after upgrading to Hardy Heron. Wireless was working fine under Gutsy, however after the upgrade to Hardy the wireless network still appeared to be configured in the Network Settings dialog box however the network wasn't connected. When I re-entered (the same) WPA password the network connected and worked as expected.

Since the initial upgrade, anytime I reboot or disable and re-enable the wireless connection in the Network Settings dialog the wireless returns to the problematic state. I.e. it appears to be configured as before but isn't connected. Re-entering the same WPA passphrase causes the network to work again until next re-start.

As I say, this was working fine under Gutsy, it seems to have broken with the upgrade to Hardy. There's been no change to the hardware of the computer or wireless hub, nor any configuration changes to either side other than the upgrade to Hardy.

I see this bug is currently marked Incomplete. what additional information do I need to provide in order to allow progress on this?

I too have this problem. What appears to happen is that a new and longer WPA key is automatically generated at each reboot. Entering the original key allows connection.

I found a way to solve this issue as I was have the same one. It might work for you too.

The key point is the sleep command.

After making the changes in post #12 I was good to go.

This is more of a work around than a fix, but it makes me happy :)

Here is a copy of the important parts of that thread for redundancy purposes:

Here is a copy of the /etc/network/interfaces file I was trying:

Code:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto ath0
sleep 20

iface ath0 inet dhcp
wpa-psk 8501.....dcf
wpa-driver wext
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
wpa-proto WPA2
wpa-ssid myid

If you're entering the WPA key, that implies that you're using network-manager; reassigning to that package since this has nothing to do with wireless-tools.

It's probable that any bugs in Ubuntu 7.10 related to WPA keys are no longer present in Ubuntu 8.10 because network-manager has undergone rapid development since then, so we'll need users seeing this problem to re-test with the latest release.

I'm not able to verify since I don't have a WiFi connection ATM.
