Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase

When attempting to run Wine 0.9.46 the screen goes black. Exiting the Wine app (winecfg, notepad, etc.) restores the display. On the same system, Wine does not exhibit this behavior in XFCE. Only errors I noticed are in .xsession-errors:

X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3

It only seems to occur when the wine app is in the foreground. If I alt-tab the desktop is shown, and back to black if I alt-tab to wine again. Also occurs at 800x600.

I had this problem until I switched to the NVidia video driver. Then it works better than ever - much faster startup than on Edgy or Feisty.

So maybe it's some kind of driver incompatibility.

not sure if it related, but i get the black screen while wine apps are in the foreground (but with no error messages).

this happens when i try to run wine over ssh

sam@titania:~$ ssh -XC oberon
sam@oberon:~$ winecfg

(titania is a runing powerpc ubuntu 7.04 with radeon driver, oberon is running amd64 ubuntu with nouveau driver)

other programs work fine over ssh. wine works fine just on oberon (no tunneling).

could this be a direct rendering issue? does wine always use direct rendering?

I'm confirming this bug based on the comments above. There is enough information for the developers to begin work on this.

Could anyone confirm if this is still present in Hardy 8.04.01 please.

Thanks for helping.

Hi, I'm not able to reproduce this bug on the latest Ubuntu. We now have newer versions of Wine and the various video card drivers that were probably responsible, so I'm going to tentatively mark it fixed released. If you encounter it again please feel free to reopen the bug. Thank you for reporting!
