Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

I'm running 7.10 beta. Basically, on shutdown I get a blank screen. Usplash is fine on boot up. I have tried the workaround of adding vga=791 to the end of the line for my kernel (2.6.22-14 generic) which is a method which has worked since 7.04. I have an Acer aspire 3003 laptop with an integrated SiS chip. Usplash was always fine in Edgy, faulty but fixable in Feisty and looks completely broken in Gutsy for my laptop.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter [1039:6330] (prog-if 00 [VGA])

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. The first thing you should know about usplash in Gutsy is that most of time, people get a bad configuration because of the ubiquity installer. In order to know if your issue is caused by this problem, can you follow these instructions and tell if it fixes your problem?

1. Go to your System / Administration / Screen and Graphic menu and look at your actual screen resolution.
2. Type this in a terminal : gksu gedit /etc/usplash.conf
3. Modify the xres= and yres= lines to have the same resolution as you saw earlier in Screen and Graphic and save the file.
4. Type this in a terminal to save the settings : sudo update-initramfs -u

Thanks. I checked the usplash.conf file and the xres and yres were already set to 1024 and 768 respectively. I updated initramfs as per your instructions and still get a blank screen on shutdown. I think this may be more of a problem with the sis driver in gutsy as it works better if I use the vesa driver.

Thanks for this information. It seems that this bug happens with a specific hardware in your case, so can your provide two attached files created by these commands on a terminal?

Thank you very much for these informations. I set Importance to low. Maybe one last thing before I set the status to Triaged, is it possible for you to install latest Hardy alpha release on your computer and to confirm if you can still reproduce this bug?

I have installed Hardy alpha 6 and updated it today. Usplash appears, albeit at a low resolution (I think 800x600), on startup but still doesn't appear on shutdown

Thanks a lot for your confirmation. I set the bug to confirmed since you can still reproduce it with latest Hardy release. The low resolution of usplash in Hardy is bug 188764 and it affects all computers, I'm currently working to make sure that this get fixed before the Release Candidate.

Glad to see the resolution on startup - it looks good but I still don't get the splash screen on shutdown - just the verbose text as if I had pressed alt+f1

Just to say that adding the vga=791 in /boot/grub/menu.lst does produce a splash screen on shutdown in Hardy but I would say that is just a workaround rather than a fix.

Bug 102894 describes the same issue. Therefore, I set this bug as a duplicate of bug 151692 and I set bug 102894 to confirmed. Any further discussions about that bug should happens in bug 102894 .
