Bug Description

i tried to upgrade throug internet. but after installation i can't boot on kernel higher then 2.6.20-16. all i have when i try to boot on 2.6.22-xx is just a two millimeters of blue status bar on boot screen.

i think, that maybe its because of blackout (downloading was interrupted, and resumed after reboot). how can i check downloaded archives or download them again?

for last half-an-hour tried to boot on 2.6.22-14 kernel in recovery mode. It stops on different places every time, so i do not know, how log/dmesg useful would be. For one attempt i've even saw a user@mycomp sign. When i typed "startx" - KDE started but have freezed on "initializing services" - the second graphics icon.

Hi Kamba,

I assume this issue still exists in the final 7.10 Gusty Gibbon release. When you boot in "recovery mode" can you take a digital photo of your screen when you experience the issue. Please attach this photo to this bug report, it will be helpful to us to see the messages leading up to the error. Thanks.

Also, the Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. We'd really appreciate it if you could try testing with this newer kernel and verify if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1 LiveCD was released with the older 2.6.22 kernel. You'll have to manually install the newer Hardy Heron kernel in order to test. This should not be the case for Alpha2 which is set to come out around Dec 20. However, here are the instructions to install if you choose to do so, otherwise just wait for Alpha2 to come out:

1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted

2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new kernel from the grub menu

After you've tested, please feel free to revert back - ie boot into the old kernel, sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic, and remove the line from /etc/apt/sources.list . Please update this report with your results. Thanks in advance!

Hi, Leann. Unfortunatly, i don't have digicamera. But i already said, that 2.6.22 kernel stops boot on different steps of process. Sometimes i even saw a graphic shell. But mostly it stops not far from the beginning of boot process.

I have Asus x50m. Nvidia Geforce GO 6100. All co-processors, buses, bridges and other stuff are NVidia corporation C51 series. Ethernet controller by Atheros Communications Inc.

P.S. Now i'm trying to upgrade to Hardy, as you advised. We'll see

Hi Kamba,

I'm glad to hear things are working for you now. Thanks for your patience and persistence :) In terms of what changes happened between the Gutsy and the Hardy kernel you'll have to look at a few different locations. First, the kernel Hardy kernel was sync'd with the mainline kernel. You'll probablly have to go through the mainline kernel's release announcement's to see the sepcific changes from 2.6.22 through the 2.6.24-rc[#] releases. However, the following might also help:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux

In terms of what has changed overall with the distribution, the following might help:

http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha1

I'll be closing the bug report since things appear to be working. Please feel free to report any future bugs you may find, it's much appreciated. Thanks!
