Bug Description
I went through the gui upgrade process from 15.04 to 15.10 on my home media PC. The update finished, but I am unable to access the syste.
When the pc boots up now, after the grub menu countdown finishes, a black square appears in the middle of the screen. The system does not seem to progress from there. The HD light on the pc does blink sporadically, as if it is processing something, but keyboard and mouse inputs are ignored. If I tap the power button, then the system responds and shutsdown cleanly.
Crude video demo of what is happening: https:/
System is an older Dell Optiplex 780. AMD Athalon 64 X2 5000+, 8GB DDR2 PC-6400, SanDisk SSD, ATI HD 6670.
I was using the proprietary drivers.
I have gone in to the Advanced boot options/recovery mode and done the file system check, and repair broken packages.
Nothing changed that I can see, except everything passed.
Did a memory check as well, which found no flaws.
I'm still new to linux systems, so if you could please point me to what logs or information you would need to diagnose this, I will provide them.
Thank you,
Chris
Ok, I determined that the system did not freeze. The system continues to go forward enough to bring up at least part of the network stack. Enough that I can ping the system anyways.
I was able to boot into a live USB and extract the /var/log directory which I have bundled and included.
Scanning through the logs, I was unable to find any "error", "fail", or "unsuccessful" pointers, but one of the lightdm files said it couldn't find the .face file. I do not know if that is significant or not.
