This bug might be a duplicate of #122975. I tried to open an e-mail and thunderbird crashed after lots of CPU activity.

I found that if I disable the Lightning Add-on Thunderbird works properly again. I'm still not sure if the bug is in Thunderbird or Lightning, though.
Do you have Lightning installed? Any other Add-ons?
