Bug Description

When running xsnow by executing it in Terminal nothing happens. I am running Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 with GNOME 3.16, though when I was on Ubuntu (Unity) 14.10 it also did not work. All that happens when it is run is I get this output in Terminal:

    Xsnow-1.42resizeable, December 14th 2001 by Rick Jansen (<email address hidden>)

Thanks for taking the time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu better.

I can confirm that xsnow 1:1.42-9 doesn't display anything when I attempt to run it on Ubuntu 15.04 (or Wily). I tested under Unity.

Based on the other bug report (bug 153078), it looks like xsnow might have problems with certain desktops, but I don't know this well enough to assess whether this is a duplicate or not.

Just to confirm, this issue is still present on Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 with GNOME 3.18.

This could be because of global warming.

Same is (sadly) true for xubuntu 16.04: xsnow does not work any more AND
IT IS DECEMBER! I really need xsnow!

xsnow from xubuntu 12.04 has had no problems.

Maybe a new XFCE settings problem?

When I terminate xfdesktop (with option -Q), xsnow works as normal. but
then I have no more the window list on mouse middle click and no
application menu on mouse right click (on background)

In contrast, xpenguins has no such problems. It does work together with xfdesktop.

Also, I don't have xfdesktop so not having that doesn't remove the issue for me. I assume though that there will be an equivalent for my flavour though.

There is a new xsnow, based on the original, working in gnome, kde, fvwm, lxde, raspbian and probably many more: https://www.ratrabbit.nl/ratrabbit/content/xsnow/introduction

It is the intention to push this version to the Debian repo's.

The new version of xsnow is now available on sourceforge:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/xsnow/

From the website:

Finally, a working xsnow for Gnome, KDE, etc. Based on the original xsnow-1.42 created by Rick Jansen, after the xsnow-2019 conference in Antas (Spain) we now have available a xsnow that works on many desktop environments, even Raspian. By request of many beta-testers, a graphical front end has been created as well.

Works for me using Ubuntu 20.04 and 21.10 (dev) so
closing as being fixed. May be someone could check
using a current release of Xubuntu?
