XPenguins runs, but no penguins arrive

Running xpenguins outputs the following and then nothing happens:

Redrawing overwritten desktop icons

Pressing Ctrl+C ends the program, and that is about the only thing that can be done. Has Unity killed penguins?

I can confirm this--Ubuntu 14.04.3 with default Unity desktop. No penguins.

So, xpenguins are now officially dead on Unity /sadface...
I'm on 15.10.

Running Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 with GNOME 3.22 and xpenguins also doesn't make any penguins appear for me. Nor does it output anything.
