Bug Description

I have a fresh install of Kubuntu Wily Beta 1. My laptop is a Dell XPS 15 with a Nvidia video. I tried both drivers nouveau and nvidia with the same result.

I can reproduce the error ALWAYS, when I put the laptop to sleep it wont resume, I can see the power light and the keyboard backlight turning on as if it will wake up, but then just a black screen. I cannot even switch to a terminal (Ctr+Alt+F1), the only solution it to restart.

The problem is not only when sleeping, it also happens when the screen is turned off by Power Management.

Gaston M. Tonietti, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)? Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, Y, and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

I've tried suspending with pm-suspend, shutting the lid and pressing the power button as both are set to suspend in power management settings. And I tried resuming opening the lid and pressing the power button.

All methods with the same result, the laptop is suspended but when I want to resume the power light turns on but the screen is black and I cannot connect over ssh either. So it's worse than a graphics related issue.

Following the steps in DebuggingKernelSuspend page I was able to resume after suspending with the command:

    `sudo sh -c "sync && echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace && pm-suspend"`

WiFi wasn't enable after resuming but I was able to enable it manually .

I'm attaching my *wakeup* and *dmesg* as advised by the debugging guide.

Hi Christopher, is something in the debugging info I've uploaded telling you the problem is related to the intel driver? As I said before the very same problem is showed up using the nouveau driver.

Maybe I should try it again using nouveau driver together with the latest kernel.

More tests confirm that it's not Intel or graphics related.

I started in text mode using root console option from Ubuntu recovery, then I removed Intel module i915, finally I suspended using pm-suspend and I was not able to resume. Same bug. No DRM graphics driver module loaded.

Should I fill a bug at Kernel's Bugzilla?

Thanks,
Gaston.

Hi Christopher, would you mind to give me a hint on the email address?
I've already tried linux-pm at lists linux-foundation org and vger kernel org. But neither of them work.

Thanks.
Gaston.

Hey, I think I am also affected by this bug. I run Ubuntu 15.10 on a Thinkpad yoga (first gen) with kernel 4.2.0-25-generic. When waking up after hibernating the screen goes completely black after entering the encryption passphrase. Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work. I also can't change the Fn-Lock of the keyboard as indicated by a separate LED. I can only poweroff by pressing the powerbutton for some time. I will gladly supply any more information if needed.

I have reported the bug upstream but I have no answer from the kernel
maintainers.
In the meantime my workaround was to install las kernel 4.1 from Ubuntu
Kernel Archive.

Cheers.
Gaston.

Gaston M. Tonietti, the reason you didn't get a response would be because the root causing wasn't deep enough to conclude much.

To advise, the root causing procedures are now much more in-depth. Hence, could you please provide the missing information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend ?

I think the cause might be the broadcom driver. I have the same issue with a broadcom driver on the BCM4352. After installing Ubuntu 15.10 I added drivers for the broadcom and the computer cannot suspend resume.
