Unless someone steps up soon to become the Ubuntu maintainer of Tor, I will remove the package by the release candidate.

Well, I don't understand the problem. I have been following the thread for the past few days.
I notice that the Tor package on Debian is up to date. Is there much difference between the package of Debian & Ubuntu ?
Anyways, I have done some packages before. So I don't think it will be a problem that I would sync. with Debian every while

Btw, I notice that the upstream himself maintains a repository that holds Ubuntu package for the latest version of Tor. That's why I don't understand what's the problem. Isn't it just going to be syncing with his repository ? And probably do some changes if needed ?

In the thread it says: "We just cannot put new versions into stable releases without testing them at all."
Please define "testing".
Also, there was the other option of going into backports, what's the problem of that option ?

Review the new versions for new features or behavioural changes, check
that package upgrades work and do not break existing configurations,
test that the package still functions properly, etc.

The development release does not have any problem, like you say, we
can just sync from Debian. But that's not what people are use, they
want a stable version of Ubuntu. If nobody in Ubuntu looks after this
package and keeps it up to date, then we should better remove it for
the reasons stated on the ML.

They are not enabled by default, thus most users of Tor would not get
them. The updates need to undergo the proper SRU [1] procedure.

Well, if no one steps in. I can give it a try. I've been using Tor for a
while (currently I am using the 0.2 branch). But I don't know about all
its features, hence I do not know if I qualify for the task or not.

As a Tor user - if it gets removed from the Ubuntu repo, I'm no longer going to use it. I'm not going to add an external repo, and I will shut down my tor exit nodes. It is a shame upstream wants it removed.

Aron Sisak kindly volunteered to look after tor in gutsy and hardy, so we should not remove it any more.
