Bug Description

A couple weeks ago Installed ubuntu 14.04 on an hp spectre x360. It works great except for a strange keyboard problem. Every 2 or 3 minutes the keyboard freezes for about 1 second - it misses keystrokes completely. Anything typed during that 1 second period is missed. For that same period, the LED in the F5 key turns off. The F5 key is normally illuminated. If you hit it, that turns the LED off and turns on the keyboard backlight. Hit it again, and the backlight goes off and F5 lights up again. Apparently while that light is out, the keyboard is disabled.

I wrote a program that printed a variable character pattern to a terminal every 4 times/sec and just watched it. I wanted to know if the whole computer (or just whole desktop?) was freezing, or just the keyboard. When the keyboard light turned off, the program kept running, so I think it's just the keyboard.

The timing of the light blinking off is variable. If I am not typing, the light seems to blink at a 2min 30 sec.to 3min 30 sec period. It seems more often than that when I am actually typing, perhaps 2 minutes. I'm guessing this is a keyboard driver problem? Anyone else seen this?
/proc/version is Linux version 3.16.0-43-generic (buildd@brownie) (gcc version 4.8.2 (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) ) #58~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 22 10:21:20 UTC 2015.

I downloaded and tested the V4.2-rc4-unstable kernel. I verified it was the one running by displaying /proc/version. The bug still persists. The F5 key light goes off for about 1 sec. and the keyboard is disabled while the light is off.

Hi:
I believe I have done what you asked. I tested the 4.2 kernel (still has
bug). I then made a new post and included the 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'
string in it. If that is not what you meant by 'tag' let me know.
Thanks very much for your attention to this troublesome problem.

Mr. Penalver:
There is very little about the computer itself on the printed label on the
underside (It's FCC stuff and such.) However the actual HP model number is
13-4002dx. If this is not what you are looking for, please contact me and
I'll look further.

Sorry to take so long to respond - been out of circulation for a couple
days.

If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

Mr. Penalver:
Updating the BIOS fixed the problem! This computer has a "born on" date of
July 1, yet the current rev. of the Megatrends BIOS is F.25 and one they
delivered this machine with was only F.04.

So you can mark this one solved, or closed, or whatever the term is (or I
will if you ell me what to do) and thanks very much.
