Bug Description

Binary package hint: xdg-user-dirs

Continuing from bug 123435. The translations for xdg-user-dirs are now in the language packs, but the translations aren't used always since they are not always available. The folders and menu entries are untranslated if the language packs are not downloaded during installation time (eg. no WLAN connection enabled when installing, or no Internet connection at all). If the language files are downloaded afterwards user-dirs update programs aren't run because the selected language itself isn't being changed.

I'd suggest including xdg-user-dirs translations for all the languages on the desktop CD itself, like is done eg. for installer strings and menu entries, since otherwise these problems cannot be avoided. The only other option would somehow to detect when xdg-user-dirs translations for the selected language suddenly become available, and run update in that situation.

    - don't strip translations so translated directories are created
on system where the language packs are not installed (LP: #147657)

I have translated xdg-user-dirs in Launchpad, but I could not figure out how to make the translations actually appear in Gutsy. The extisting English translations were not updated with the latest language-pack , a reinstall of the package also did not help.

Most probably you have to switch language back to English and then back to your own language, restarting computer in-between. Users that install the final release with latest language packs should have the localized folder names automatically.

That did not work. Even deleting the foldes and doing xdf-user-dirs-update brought back the English names.

Then the language packs haven't probably been updates, the last time was on 2nd of October.

Actually, this means that a new, updated package needs to be created, since translations are not stripped (and it would include all the new translations, depending on how is build performed; if it's just non-stripped translations, but not including those from Launchpad, you'd have to go and translate this directly upstream).

But, I suggest you open a new bug asking about that.
