Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub

Hello,

I have a laptop with one disk (60 GB). On the first partition (20 GB) I have Windows XP installed. When booting with the Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon BETA and install the system using the free space (40 GB) it can see the WinXP/NTFS partition fine.
After installation, at boot I can not see any Windows XP entries in GRUB list.

This has also afflicted the desktop install I did of Gutsy Beta - I've seen this reported as far back as one of the tribe releases but I can't see that anyone bothered to report it here.

sda has my windows install
sdb was resized and had gutsy installed on it

Grub failed to detect the windows install on sda when it was being configured by the installer. Unlike others who have reported similar issues, my windows install really is intact:

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19452 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xca26ca26

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 19451 156240126 7 HPFS/NTFS

Disk /dev/sdb: 160.0 GB, 160000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19452 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xcaadcaad

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 11866 95313613+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sdb2 * 11867 19137 58404307+ 83 Linux
/dev/sdb3 19138 19452 2530237+ 5 Extended
/dev/sdb5 19138 19452 2530206 82 Linux swap / Solaris

This is a Dell XPS 700 with 4GB ram, Windows XP MCE installed, and RAID turned off.

I've attached my grub menu.lst, but it's really not exciting; it has what you'd expect, except no windows option was added.

I think this was a rather subtle bug that I've fixed in daily builds. I'd appreciate re-testing with the release candidate when it's released (or with daily builds if you're feeling brave).

I just reinstalled using the daily build from 02/10/07 and just installed onto the existing partitions (with a format). Windows on hd(0,0)/sda1 is still not in the menu.lst.

Does grub not bother looking for other operating systems if you don't do a resize?

OK, could I please have all the installer logs? /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/installer/partman should be a good start; I may get back for more if necessary.

PhilB: Thanks, I think I might have got it. Could you please try tomorrow's daily build of the alternate install CD to confirm my fix?

  * If fuseblk is in /proc/filesystems and ntfs-3g is present, try mounting
    filesystems as ntfs-3g (LP: #147617).

Oops, sorry. Misplaced carriage return - please close my erroneous "Also needs fixing here".

I'll give the new daily a go tomorrow.

Sorry, no dice. Still doesn't work with 03/10/07 AMD64 daily. I'll get you the logs again in a bit but I'm not in front of that machine anymore. Anything else you want?

  * Add support for mount -i (don't use external mount helper), and trivial
support for umount -i although busybox umount doesn't support external
helpers yet. This should be enough to support mounting FUSE filesystems
    in d-i (LP: #147617).
  * Support mount -f even if mtab support isn't compiled in.
  * Fix handling of mount -f and -n.
