Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-new

I have an XFX Nvidia GeForce 7600GT AGP. After installing the proprietary video drivers from any source (restricted-drivers-manager, envy, automatix - yes, i know, it was a last-ditch effort, and the driver from the nvidia site) GNOME will almost load all the way and then completely freeze my system (ctrl+alt+f1 doesn't even work). It freezes as it loads the clock and other toolbar applets. I have tried fresh installs using all of the methods described above, to no avail. I tried on a fresh install of kubuntu, to no avail. I tried on Gutsy Beta (today is 9/29/2007) to no avail. I am not sure where the bug exists, but it seems to be in either the driver itself or in ubuntu. I tried the relevant steps described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia#troubleshooting but none of them worked. I can and have reproduced the bug.

If you would like more information, please don't hesitate to contact me at <email address hidden>.
I can even reinstall Ubuntu as many times as you want, because my data is on a separate drive.

I have a GEForce 7300 SE with proprietari nvidia drivers. My computer randomly freezes, with the same simptoms reported by Andruk. I cannot do anything but hard-switch off the PC.

I have a BFG 7600GT and I also see this problem running the nvidia driver with Hardy Beta . GDM loads fine and gnome will start up, displaying the splash screen. After the splash screen disappears I'm left with a brown background and a mouse cursor surrounded by a pattern of dark pixels. The mouse cursor moves jerkily and ALT+F1, ALT+BKSPC and ALT+CTL+DEL do not work. Gutsy worked fine for me with nvidia and Hardy works with the nv driver.

Is this still an issue?

Yes, it's still an issue and I'm experiencing it in 8.04 (8.10 doesn't solve it either). Look the quantity of posts in the related thread in the nvidia forums:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=123912

Although the post is about 180.* series of drivers, I'm experiencing the exact same issues with the Ubuntu provided 169.xx driver for 8.04. I posted my opinion in that same thread, though I'm not sure it's a problem of the nvidia driver or xorg. It's also very noticeable in opengl apps such as Blender, where you see truly lame flickering polygon edges in the 3D models whenever you rotate about them.

Xv/direct rendering also triggers the problem for some videos (not all).

I had no problems with a previous proprietary driver and previous nvidia card.

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

It's fine with me to close this bug - for now. I've been in the
middle of moving, and so I need to find, unpack, and setup the system
with the problematic videocard before I can test anything. So when
the time comes, I will reopen this if necessary.

Thanks for the help.

damn, sorry! Was away and did not see this. And it'll be some 2
weeks before I come back home so as to test it.

In the mean time, I simply removed the nvidia-package and gone with
the nv driver. Had to quit Blendering because of the issue, but even
without it the issue would still show up.

As soon as I get back, I'll try to test it.
