Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.1 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Today I issued an apt-get dist-upgrade and the kernel has been upgraded to
the above.

I always had this issue but only when getting back from hibernation (I've
installed only a couple of months ago)

After the upgrade of today the issues become severe.. I cannot have a
coffee without rebooting afterwards :)
Today only I've seen the panic message on the console and more logging
about nouveau

I'm going to try 4.1-rc8-unstable from kernel-ppa/mainline and report back
from here

Thank you

Best
Luca

Dear
the panic seems gone with 4.1 rc8 when coming back from black screen. The dmesg is not reporting any nouveau error anymore

The suspend/hibernation freeze issues persist but probably this is another issues (?)

Thanks Luca

muka, as per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-y-series-laptops/y50-70-notebook-lenovo an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (9ECN37WW). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

I've spent hours trying to sort this out. I've found no sane way to do a
BIOS upgrade with the current utilty provided by Lenovo
FreeDOS seems the best way but files name get rewritten to 8 char and I
would avoid to brik the pc (maybe just an ignorant fear?)
Need to spend more time on this.

I experienced again the behaviour, while the pc load I get a bunch of
messages and the pc freeze as usual
