Bug Description

Hello,

The new gdm theme Human is great but still not have a version with browser.
Ubuntu is also for family. Just think to people coming from Windows XP or only
to linux-friendly family (i have a 5 users computer).

Thanks for the pretty hoary artwork !

Human theme with face browser

i've adapted the human gdm theme to include a face browser, i'm no artist so
there's nothing particularly special done, but it looks ok.

there are a couple of problems; the gdm.conf ideally needs to be altered to
include:

MaxIconWidth=48
MaxIconHeight=48

so that oversize face pictures don't make the browser unusable and/or ugly.
also the About Me capplet should use gdmphotosetup to set the ~/.face file
otherwise the above settings are not obeyed. (should this be filed as a
separate bug?)

also there's a problem with the face pictures not being readable by the gdm
service because of the permissions, i've filed a bug for this (#13888).

but that being said you can use the theme as things stand and it works fine
(just uses default face picture)

Reworked Human theme with face list.

Hello all,

I've work a bit on the theme proposed by Simon in order to have a better look.
See attachement. What i like in this theme is : the face browser is not like OS
X. the face browser is not like Windows© XP. the face browser is not like gdm
standard greeter. It's just at the right place :)

Regards.

HumanList GDM Theme with face selector

Hello,

I updated the greeter theme. I try to make the xml simplier. I'm sad because
the greeter language does not allow to build "flexible" themes.

I wish this theme will be give you ideas for the breezy artwork. I wish you'll
ship a GDM theme with face selector.

Could someone tell me what's the current state of artwork for breezy ? Is it
planned to ship a face selector ?

Thank you.

Hello,

The Human theme has been greatly improved in the last week. An optinal theme is shiped (circle of friends). Why not include another optional theme with face selector ?

Thanks

Hello,

Malone seems not to accept mail attached files. Here is a new HumanList, derivated from the new Human Theme.

I wonder if it's better to edit previous attachements or to add another. In doubt, i add it.

I also have a screenshot but malone does not allow several attachments ...

Thanks for considering my request.

Hello,

I'm very glad to see this theme included in ubuntu artwork. Is this
possible to add my name in the author field of the theme ? I did not
dare to add it this time. I'm quite proud to participate in ubuntu :)
Of course, all changes i made and screenshots i give are free as in
freedom.

I also encountered this:

automake: configure.in: required file `./config.guess' not found
automake: configure.in: required file `./config.sub' not found
art/icons/hicolor/Makefile.am:6: invalid variable `nobase_dist_theme_DATA'
art/icons/Human/Makefile.am:11: invalid variable `nobase_dist_theme_DATA'

So the package currently includes no icons...

I can't really answer this question, I just joined the list because I
think is of extreme importance that the Human icons in their current
state do not reach final version.

These icons are lousy and they will make a lot of people unhappy with
Ubuntu. I hope there's a vote where we can get to chose.

I'm glad someone else is as concerned as I am. :-)

Unfortunately, I can in late in the game. I actually started making a new theme about a month ago, but my time is limitedd and I've been occupied with other things I do understand and have experience in. Yes a strange thing I noticed is that Ubuntu (Edgy Eft) does by default deliver a GDM theme with userbrowser/facebrowser called "Happy GNOME with Browser" but does not deliver one in Ubuntu Human style.
In my opinion it would be a real good thing if at least one Human style GDM theme with userbrowser/facebrowser would be included in Feisty.

I believe sabdfl approved it in principle.

There are no official design documents, so following the 'style' is virtually impossible as there isn't one.

I don't get what you're saying here. Are you saying that you'll make
the design of the face browser as neutral as possible so that it'll
fit in with any style? That's generally not the way to go if you're
making default artwork. There is already a big enough inconsistency
problem in Ubuntu as it is, due to the lack of official design
documentation.

It's nothing hardcoded if you fear that. It will be as themeable as
always. I'm afraid I cannot tell you more right now.
