external usb breaks suspend

After booting xubuntu 15.04 it's possible to suspend it the normal way BUT - only until you've plugged external usb hard drive. After that (even if it was unmounted and removed) it becomes impossible: the system goes to suspend briefly (for bout 1 second) but immediately wakes up for no apparent reason.

I suspect there's some weird bug in xfce power management - is there a way to disable it alltogether and rely on systemd directly instead?

You can disable xfce4-power-manager by deactivating its autostart launcher (Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Application Autostart).

However, this bug seems to be triggered by your hardware. Use journalctl to check if there are any related system log messages.

That is a strange bug. The system only suspends if an external drive is

Please use journalctl or look directly at /var/log/syslog for related system messages.

Lol, misread, the system does not suspend once an external drive is
attached. Thanks for the suggestion. You have given more insight to system
diagnosing.

I did not managed to find anything suspicious in the logs. Do you know how can I isolate events related to suspend/resume? Curiously, in my case the bug is triggered even if I already detached and removed external drive - system somehow "remembers" the fact. Also I highly doubt that it's hw-caused: bug appears with 3 different external usb drives, in 14.10 they worked just fine, as well as suspend on the same laptop.

It could be triggered by systemd which is used by default in 15.04.

I thought xfce4-session overrides systemd hybernation?

To narrow this down, please do:

  * Under systemd, run

       echo mem | sudo tee /sys/power/state

    check if suspend works or fails, and if it fails attach the output of "dmesg".

 * If the former works, try again with "sudo systemctl suspend". If it fails, please attach "dmesg". If it works, it's a bug somewhere higher in the stack.

 * Try booting with upstart and check if suspend works then.

If it's broken at the kernel level, you can also try running 15.04 with the 14.10 kernel.

Is there way to disable this useless brad-fagg bot somehow? It keeps complaining over logs which are already attached.

Ok, I've managed to track this down to bios setting regarding "keep feeding electrivity to usb ports while in sleep". So apparently this is some quirk related to failed efi firmware or acpi tables for asus ux31a laptop.

Hmm, scratch that - the failure reappears again even with this feature disabled in bios. But apparently it only happens with usb3 hard drives. I'm completely puzzled.
