jabref not performing online search

Bug Description

It seems jabref is unable to perform online search after the last update. When clicking on fetch after filling in the online search text, nothing happens. To me it feels there's some policy that stops it from getting online to execute the search.
This what's in the program output in the help/show error console/ log:
Apr 28, 2015 5:52:50 PM net.sf.jabref.plugin.PluginCore initialize
INFO: Found 2 plugin(s):

INFO: Could not get key binding for "Open folder"

I am a doctor and using jabref is essential to my work for practicing evidence based medicine. This is going to handicap my work till the bug is fixed.
Many thanks

Hello,

Could you please provide some more detail about the search you're trying
to perform and any additional console output produced? Once I open a
database, I'm able to perform successful searches against:

CiteSeerX
Google Scholar
ArXiv.org

A test search against ACM Portal returned a 403, which may indicate that
we need to update jabref, but I believe the general Web Search
functionality is working and that this error could be due to changes on
the ACM site.

Thank you,
tony

Hi Tony
Thank you for your email.
I use medline for my searches. However I can't even start a search. When
I click websearch nothing happens (picture attached).
I have included a bunch of files, hope you find them useful. If not pls
let me know what kind of output do you need and I'll attach it to the
reply email.
Many thanks
Sokol

Hi
Kind of worked it out.
For some reason I couldn't do any search unless I had a database open
already.
I didn't know that, now I know.
I'm sorry for all this trouble.

I noticed the same thing - it's a bit non-intuitive, but the search
function is only active after a database has been opened.

I'm glad it's working for you.

Hi, thanks for your reply, pleasantly quick.
This is not the last issue. Last time all it needing doing was to open a database.
This time jabref does try to do a search but does not return any results, 0.
I also checked to see if firewall was blocking it but:
sudo ufw status
[sudo] password for koli:
Status: inactive

So not sure what is causing the problem....
Thanks for looking at it

I tried to search for "Pain" in all search engines in JabRef,
and CiteSeerX and INSPIRE seem to be the only ones still working; the
rest other throws errors (mostly about broken URIs from what I could
see) or just returned nothing.

Looks like quite a few of the hardcoded URLs have become stale or the
services are down or impose restrictions.

Some digging shows e.g.
https://github.com/JabRef/jabref/issues/2231
https://github.com/JabRef/jabref/issues/2253
https://github.com/JabRef/jabref/issues/2228

and some others.

I hope the situation gets better when we have a newer JabRef release
in Debian and by extension in Ubuntu ...

Cheers,
gregor

Hi Gregor

Thanks for your help.

I downloaded the latest jabref from the jabref website:

http://www.jabref.org/

The latest version is: JabRef-3.7.jar

It works perfect.

Is there a way of installing it on ubuntu.

I'm not very computer savvy though.....

Thanks

Koli

I'm glad to hear this.

If you say it's working that means you can run it, so there's no need
for "installing" it :)

(Depending on the Desktop environment you're using you should also be
able to create a desktop short cut or launcher but I have no
experience whith these things.)

gregor

Build-deps, debian/rules, wrapper script, and patches have been
    completely reworked.
  * Notable new patches:
    - Disable "Lookup DOI" feature, which was causing JabRef to hang.
    - Diff-highlighting during "Merge Entries" is disabled due to license
issues that prevent the distribution of the java-diff-tools library.
  * Update debian/copyright for upstream license changes.
  * Drop lintian overrides (duplicate-word).
  * Update documentation (debian/README.Debian, debian/README.source,
debian/jabref.1, debian/jabref.bug-presubj) to match new release and
    drop outdated bits.
  * Use debhelper compatibility level 10.
