Karl, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.XY-rcZ

Where XY and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:

I tried the newest kernel and had no luck

I tried 4.1-rc1-vivid. I was going to go down the list as you had
instructed but it was a going to get a little time consuming as the problem
is intermittent. It took 10 minutes before I noticed any issues with the
new kernel, the signal strength dropped my transmission DL slowed to a
crawl. I ended up trying a couple of other things and so far it seems good
but I have not had a lot of time on my laptop to be 100% sure yet.

For the adapter, I followed the instructions from post #5

Then fore firefox itself I did this:
http://ubuntuguide.net/optimize-and-make-firefox-running-faster-than-google-chrome

I haven't had any luck ups when clicking on videos yet but have only tested
on a couple but so far so good.

Not sure if this is helpful bug info for you or not but right after writing
my response I did have an issue. I plugged my galaxy s5 into my laptop
last night to charge. For some reasons ubuntu seems to have a problem with
it, it will randomly pop up messages that it can't mount it ut then pop up
the Files app showing the contents, I had a dozen or so of those so I did I
right click quit and at the same time my transmission dl dropped to a
crawl. I did a speed test after closing transmission and my DL speed was
only 5Mbps, I reset adapter ant tested again and it is back to normal
15Mbps. I never dropped completely though, so it is possible what I did
was a partial fix.

Karl, as per http://www.linksys.com/us/support-article?articleNum=148623 an update to your router's buggy and outdated firmware is available (Ver.1.0.07). If you update to this does it change anything?

Nope, in fact it made it worse, now I am disconnecting every 5 minutes. I
had zero problems since I tried the methods I had mentioned yesterday and
this seems to have undone al that and magnified the original problem.

Nope, in fact it made it worse, now I am disconnecting every 5 minutes.  I
had zero problems since I tried the methods I had mentioned yesterday and
this seems to have undone al that and magnified the original problem.

Your IRC conversation indicates the PC also experiences intermittent issues with the Ps/2 connected Synaptic Touchpad. Hopefully that issue can be solved with some i8042.XXX kernel parameter.

If not, and combined with this issue, I would suggest a boot-time RAM test using memtest86+ (available from the GRUB boot manager menu). It is just possible that memory corruption is the root cause of both issues.

However, when the signal is lost capturing recent entries in the syslog and kern.log might be helpful here:

sudo tail -n 300 /var/log/syslog /var/log/kern.log | tee /tmp/rtl8188ee-lost-signal.log

And then attach "/tmp/rtl8188ee-lost-signal.log" to this bug report.

The issue could well be caused by some power-saving feature. The rtl8188ee kernel module has several PARaMeters that can affect power state so it might be worth doing some tests with different values. To see the parameters the module supports use the "modinfo <module-name>" command. The range of supported PARMs may differ for different versions of the Linux kernel.

For v4.1.6 I see:

If none of these tests offer improvements with the Ubuntu kernel versions then testing with the latest v4.2 mai...

So it seems since reconfiguring the Access Point to use mode 'auto' and channel 'auto' the poor performace has been cured?

No I've still had problems with disconnects.

More problems, and nwo a new symptom. Before I typically would just turn
wifi off then back on and it would work but now there are times where I do
that several times and I still can't get out despite being connected.
