Bug Description

If an AIO (All in One) Linux Mint 17.1 install DVD(iso) / USB Flash Drive is created (using grub and all other methods), it will boot normally in Live OS, but if trying to install Linux Mint to hard drive, the installer will crash a few minutes after partition/user account / password / location information were set up.

This has been tested and can be reproduced at all times, with or without internet connection.

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, but Ubuntu installer does not have this issue.

I have the same problem, happens every time with the Linux Mint 18 installer (32bit Mate edition the last time) when run from an USB drive.

This looks like a serious installer bug and should be investigated / fixed.

This can only be avoided by creating a DVD from the ISO (seriously, in 2016) and then do the install from there.
