Bug Description

What happened:
I have to unplug and plug my Huawei E3372 USB modem in order to connect to the Internet. Otherwise the Internet connection is not established. The problem is present in kernel versions 3.13.0-45 and 3.19.0-031900. However, xubuntu 12.04 works fine.

Expected to happen:
The computer should establish the Internet connection automatically.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
Plug the USB modem into the computer and switch the computer on.

I use Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.0 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Tommi Höynälänmaa, as per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g510-notebook an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (3.09). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

OK, problem here is it usb_modeswitch.
Right after boot it fails for some reason, and huawei 3372h is still visible as
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 12d1:1f01 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

But if I unplug it and plug again, then it looks like
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 12d1:14dc Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
and recognized by cdc_ether

usb_modemswitch.log is attached.

Right now I added
usb_modeswitch -v 0x12d1 -p 0x1f01 -M "55534243123456780000000000000a11062000000000000100000000000000"

It worked ones, will test more....

Sorry, I wans't aware of running mainline kernel at the time of apport-collect. I was requested to test it with #1526683.

However I don't understand your request of opening a new bug as I am highly doubful of bug expiry being intented for opening a new duplicate every 60 days.

I was also instructed to open a new one. I'm not sure, why, really, and
some conspiracy theories come to my mind. I use a WiFi router now with this
modem, but if you need any testing from me, I can do, for the glory of Open
Source.

I took this to #launchpad and they say that while the symptoms might look identical, there can be different root causes and to have those separated there should be different bugs and it should be left for the developers to decide if they are duplicates or not. Other bugs can be linked by saying "I think this is duplicate of bug #1424181."

They also said that the person in question is not a developer, but a little overenthustiastic bug triager.

PS. I am unable to open a duplicate at the moment, but I hope other people open those meanwhile.
