Bug Description

I expect a mouse in Ubuntu 14.04x64. Although xinput reports the TouchPad, it is not functional. I cannot see a mouse cursor or click things.

This is a fresh install (not an update/upgrade). I do not know if the TouchPad worked with prior kernels.

xinput reports:

SynPS/2 Synaptics Touch Pad id=11 [slave pointer (2)]

Solutions I have tried:

    Keypad solutions:
        F5
        Fn+F5
        pressing NumLock repeatedly during boot
    Modprobe solutions:
sudo modprobe -r psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse
sudo modprobe -r psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps
sudo modprobe -r psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse proto=exps
Kernel solutions (append to grub at end of quiet splash line):
        atkbd.reset i8042.nomux
        i8042.nopnp
        i8042.reset=1
    Missing Package solutions:
        sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
        sudo apt-get install gpointing-device-settings
xinput now fails to report SynPS/2 Synaptics Touch Pad

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

jtd, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem to the appropriate mailing list (linux-input) by following the instructions verbatim at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel ?

Please provide a direct URL to your e-mail to the mailing list once you have made it so that it may be tracked via http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html . It can take a day for the new e-mail to show up in the respective archive.

Thank you for your understanding.

No response in 7 months. Did I fail to do something or is it actually low priority or other?

jtd, given you have had no response from the mailing list, as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel you should re-test on the latest kernel, and only if still reproducible report to bugzilla.

Christopher, I do not know if bugs.launchpad.net is "report to bugzilla," but I have tested the latest upstream kernel:

Linux version 4.1.0-040100rc2-generic (kernel@gomeisa) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5) ) #201505032335 SMP Mon May 4 03:36:35 UTC 2015

The TouchPad still appears to be non-functional.

If I should report this somewhere else, I would appreciate a link and I will report. Thanks for all your help!!

As this report is already on bugs.launchpad.net, my asking you to re-report the same thing you already reported wouldn't make sense.

The latest mainline kernel is 4.2, not 4.1.x.
