Bug Description

Hi,

Install Gutsy X86_64, with 2.6.22-11.32 all was Ok
Since last update 2.6.22-11.33 my HP nc8430 does not boot.
It hang on this:
.....
PCI: Using Configuration Type 1
ACPI: EC: GPE=0x16, ports = 0x66 , 0x66

Workaround is to add kernelparameters acpi=off and irqpoll, throws some irq 10 errors however.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in linux-source-2.6.22

Yesterday's updates broke ACPI (I suspect) on HP Compaq nc8430 laptops (two threads in Gutsy Development Forums about this).

The boot stops at different times, but always to the messages:

12.136... ACPI: bus type pci registered
12.136... PCI: Using configuration type 1
12.138... ACPI : EC: GPE=0x16, ports=0x66, 0x62

and there it freezes.

Later , a messsage may pop up:
38.736...: "CPU1:Temperature/speed normal "

A temporary fix is to add acpi=off and irqpoll options to grub menu.lst
But, since this is a laptop, it is important to get ACPI working.

It could be that the changes that were made specifically for Lenovo Thinkpads that appeared yesterday (there were plenty) have something to do with this.

I did a little research in google. Maybe it is related to the embedded Controller of the laptop not responding and enabling async scanning in .config of the 2.6.22 kernel
Juksu wrote 5 hours ago: (permalink)

Could be, if the recent updates (=yesterday) changed that part.
However, I do not know how to verify/test that without instructions.

Before yesterday's updates almost everything was working fine! (I'm running the 64-bit version of Gutsy)

Yes, my kernel is up-to-date, the update/upgrade yesterday is what broke it.

But these files are after a boot with the acpi=off and irqpoll options enabled in xorg menu.lst.

Suspend/resume has not worked since Edgy on this laptop and is not related to this non-boot problem, I think.

I attached the previous post (sorry for the double) from the other more informative bug thread related to this as per your request.

Won't the developers know what was changed in yesterday's updates and how that affects acpi (on our laptops vs thinkpads)?

Previous version of 2.6.22-11-generic (11.13?) had no problems with ACPI.

Hi Juksu
when a bug is marked as triaged means that has been confirmed by a member of ubuntu QA and has enough information for the developers to start working on it.
It's about the same of confirmed status, but with a QA member backing it up.

You can get more information about bug status at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status

This info comes from the laptop with acpi=off and irqpoll options enabled.
It started at the same time as the boot crash. Should I file another bug report?

I just checked, and after updates until now, the behavior is the same - crash at boot - without the acpi=off option.
Haven't tried the ones jens just suggested.
